Causes

  • Battery disconnected or drained during module initialization or programming
  • Interrupted software update or module programming
  • New or replaced control module not yet configured
  • Corrupted or missing module calibration/data
  • Loss of CAN/LIN bus communication during initialization
  • Faulty wiring, poor grounds or loose connectors to module

Symptoms

  • One or more features disabled or operating in degrade/limp mode
  • Multiple modules reporting communication or configuration errors
  • Instrument cluster warnings or message indicating service required
  • Vehicle may not start or exhibit immobiliser/FTB behavior if security module not configured
  • Erratic behaviour of affected systems (lighting, body functions, climate, etc.)

What to check

  • Connect a manufacturer-capable diagnostic tool and read all stored/configuration DTCs and freeze frame
  • Check battery state-of-charge and charging system; ensure stable 12V (or specified system voltage) during diagnostics
  • Verify all module connectors, grounds, and related fuses are secure and corrosion-free
  • Scan for other communication DTCs (U0100, U0121, U0140, etc.) that may indicate bus issues
  • Check module software and calibration part numbers and compare to vehicle build data
  • Inspect CAN/LIN bus physical layer (wiring continuity, short to power/ground, termination)

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage (key ON and during cranking)
  • CAN bus voltage levels and error counters
  • Presence/absence of expected CAN message IDs from related modules
  • Module UDS/UDS-on-CAN session responses (DiagnosticSessionControl)
  • Module software/calibration part numbers and serial numbers
  • Voltage at module supply and ground pins

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool and record all stored and pending U-codes and related control module DTCs.
  2. Verify battery state-of-charge and charge if needed. Ensure stable vehicle voltage (manufacturer-specified level) before any reprogramming.
  3. Note any other communication faults (e.g., U0100, U0121). If present, diagnose physical CAN/LIN issues first — check wiring, pin damage, shorts, and termination resistors.
  4. Inspect connectors and grounds for the modules reporting U2100. Repair/clean as required and clear codes. Cycle ignition and re-check.
  5. If message indicates a newly installed module or interrupted programming, attempt to complete the initial configuration using the manufacturer diagnostic software (module initialization, coding or Gateway configuration). Follow JLR/Land Rover procedures and ensure proper vehicle security/authentication.
  6. If programming previously failed, perform re-flash/update to correct software/calibration using factory tools. Monitor for errors during programming and maintain battery voltage.
  7. After successful configuration/programming, clear codes and perform functional tests of affected systems. Re-scan the vehicle for recurrence.
  8. If fault persists after correct configuration and good bus communication, consider module replacement only after confirming the module is configured correctly and all wiring is good.

Likely causes

  • Battery voltage too low during module setup (most common)
  • Module added/replaced and not configured with factory tool
  • Programming session failed or was aborted
  • CAN bus wiring problem preventing configuration messages
  • Module memory corruption requiring reflash

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Initial configuration incomplete: one or more modules have not finished programming or configuration. Functionality of affected systems may be reduced until configuration/programming is completed and communication restored.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
