Causes

  • Faulty or unpowered info-display module (instrument cluster / information display)
  • Open, short or intermittent wiring on CAN High / CAN Low or power/ground circuits
  • Poor connector contact or corrosion at display or junction connectors
  • Missing or failed CAN termination (open/shorted 120 Ω resistors)
  • Battery/vehicle voltage too low or missing power/fuse to display
  • Module programming/coding or software mismatch after replacement

Symptoms

  • Info-display is blank, frozen, or shows communication error
  • Related instrument-cluster functions or messages not available
  • Multiple CAN-related DTCs or network warnings present
  • Some vehicle functions controlled through the display not working
  • Intermittent appearance/disappearance of the display

What to check

  • Read all U-codes from gateway, BCM, instrument cluster and infotainment with a professional scan tool
  • Check battery voltage (key on/off) and condition; verify proper charging voltage
  • Verify fuses and relays supplying the display and related modules
  • Inspect connectors at display, BCM/gateway and intermediate junctions for corrosion, bent pins or loose locking tabs
  • Check CAN termination resistor between CANH and CANL (~60 Ω total) with power off
  • Measure CANH/CANL voltages at the display connector with ignition ON (recessive ~2.5 V)

Signal parameters

  • CAN idle (recessive) voltages: CANH ≈ 2.5 V, CANL ≈ 2.5 V (at ignition ON)
  • CAN dominant state: CANH ≈ 3.5 V, CANL ≈ 1.5 V (differential ≈ 2.0 V)
  • Termination resistance: ~60 Ω measured across CANH–CANL (two 120 Ω terminators in parallel)
  • Common bus bit rates: typically 250 kbps or 500 kbps depending on model (verify exact network speed)
  • Supply voltage to display: battery voltage present at module power pin with ignition ON

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a full-function OEM-level scan tool. Record U2117 and any additional U-codes from all modules.
  2. Verify battery voltage and relevant fuses/relays. Replace blown fuses and retest.
  3. Verify that the info-display module is present on the network using the scan tool (module ID/serial may show).
  4. Check power and ground at the info-display connector. Repair/open circuits before further network testing.
  5. Visually inspect wiring and connectors from the display to the gateway/BCM. Repair damaged connectors or wiring.
  6. With ignition ON, measure CANH and CANL idle voltages at the display connector. If out of range, isolate wiring or module.
  7. Measure termination resistance with power off. If termination missing or shorted, trace and repair resistors or harness.
  8. Use an oscilloscope or CAN bus analyzer to inspect signal waveforms, look for noise, missing frames, or bus-off conditions. Identify the node causing errors by disconnecting suspected modules one at a time if safe.
  9. If wiring and power are good but the display does not respond, consider reflashing or reprogramming the display/module per manufacturer procedure and code to vehicle.
  10. Replace the info-display module only after verifying wiring, power, and network are good. After repairs, clear DTCs and confirm communication is restored during a road test or live-data check.

Likely causes

  • Blown fuse or lost power/ground to the info-display
  • Damaged or chafed CAN wiring harness at common stress points
  • Loose or corroded connector pins at the display or gateway
  • Failed display module (internal electronics)
  • CAN bus short to battery or ground causing module to be offline
