VICS ECU Communication Error

Brand: HUMMER
AI status

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Open, short or high-resistance wiring to VICS ECU connector
  • Poor power or ground at the VICS ECU
  • Corroded or loose connector pins or water intrusion
  • Faulty VICS ECU or other network module
  • CAN/LIN bus wiring fault, short to battery or ground, or missing termination
  • Software mismatch or failed module reprogramming

Symptoms

  • Instrument cluster or vehicle information displays blank, incorrect, or frozen
  • Related features (trip computer, mileage, warnings) inoperative or intermittent
  • Multiple U-codes or module communication codes present
  • Possible illumination of master warning or communication fault indicator
  • Inability to communicate with VICS ECU using a scan tool

What to check

  • Read and record all stored DTCs and freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool
  • Note any other communication U-codes present and their timestamps
  • Verify vehicle battery voltage is stable (≥12.4 V) before and during testing
  • Visually inspect VICS ECU connector and wiring for corrosion, damage or water ingress
  • Check for aftermarket accessories that may have tapped into network wiring
  • Attempt to communicate with VICS ECU via scan tool; note module presence or failure to respond

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus nominal (recessive) voltage: ~2.5 V on CAN_H and CAN_L relative to chassis ground
  • CAN dominant state: approximate CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V and CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V during dominant bits
  • Differential voltage during activity: up to ~2 V between CAN_H and CAN_L
  • Expected termination: approx. 60 ohms between CAN_H and CAN_L at key harness points
  • Common CAN data rates: 250 kb/s or 500 kb/s (verify vehicle-specific rate)
  • LIN bus idle: ~battery voltage on master line; data pulses referenced to master/slave levels (if VICS uses LIN)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety: Park vehicle, key off, wear PPE. Stabilize battery charge.
  2. Connect a factory-level scan tool. Read and record U2153 and all other DTCs. Note module presence and network topology.
  3. Verify battery voltage and engine off voltage; charge or maintain battery if low. Reattempt communication.
  4. Inspect the VICS ECU connector and wiring for corrosion, heat damage, pin push-out, or water intrusion. Repair as needed.
  5. With ignition on, use a scope or multimeter to measure CAN_H and CAN_L at the VICS ECU connector: verify recessive ≈2.5 V and proper differential during activity. Check termination resistance (~60 Ω).
  6. If no bus activity at the VICS ECU connector but present at gateway or other module, check continuity of CAN wires between modules and repair open/shorts.
  7. If the VICS ECU loses power or ground, trace supply and ground circuits; repair connector, fusible link, or wiring faults. Re-test.
  8. If bus is shorted to battery or ground, isolate segments by disconnecting modules one at a time to find the faulted module or wiring harness.
  9. If wiring and power/ground are good but the module does not respond, attempt software reflash or reprogram per manufacturer procedure. If reflash unsuccessful, consider ECU replacement.
  10. Clear codes, verify communication restored, then road test to confirm no recurrence. Document repairs and re-scan for reappearing codes.

Likely causes

  • Loss of VICS ECU supply or ground
  • Broken or corroded connector pins at VICS ECU
  • Short or open on the CAN/LIN wiring between VICS ECU and gateway/module
  • Faulty VICS ECU (internal failure)
  • Other module on network pulling bus lines low or missing termination

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Communication error: VICS ECU not responding or intermittent on the vehicle network. Check power/ground, connectors, and bus wiring before replacing the module.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.5-3.0 hours
