Causes

  • Faulty EHU (internal failure or frozen software)
  • Power supply problem to the EHU (blown fuse, lost switched/constant 12 V)
  • Poor or missing ground(s) at the EHU
  • Open, short or high resistance in CAN-H or CAN-L wiring or connectors
  • Faulty CAN transceiver in the EHU or another node on the same bus
  • Missing or incorrect bus termination (open or shorted 120 ohm resistors)

Symptoms

  • Infotainment display blank or unresponsive
  • No audio, radio, navigation, or telephone functions from EHU
  • Cluster/warning message about communication loss with EHU
  • Certain vehicle features tied to the head unit (parking assist, camera) not working
  • Other modules reporting related CAN communication codes
  • Intermittent operation of EHU features or random reboots

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending DTCs from all modules; note related network codes and freeze frame data
  • Inspect EHU power fuses and measure battery voltage at fuse with ignition ON
  • Check EHU connector(s) for corrosion, bent pins, or water ingress; reseat connectors
  • Measure ground resistance between EHU ground terminal and chassis (should be low, near 0 Ω)
  • Measure CAN bus idle voltages at EHU connector (see signal parameters) with key ON, engine off
  • Verify presence of termination (approx. 60 Ω across CAN-H and CAN-L with ignition ON)

Signal parameters

  • CAN idle (recessive): CAN‑H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN‑L ≈ 2.5 V (common mode ~2.5 V)
  • CAN dominant: CAN‑H ≈ 3.5–4.0 V, CAN‑L ≈ 1.0–1.5 V (differential ≈ 2.0–2.5 V)
  • Differential amplitude (dominant) typically ~2.0 V
  • Termination resistance: ~60 Ω measured between CAN‑H and CAN‑L (two 120 Ω in parallel)
  • Typical bus speeds: high-speed CAN commonly 500 kb/s or 250 kb/s — verify manufacturer network speed

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Capture and record all DTCs and freeze frame info from the EHU and gateway/BCM.
  2. Visually inspect EHU connector, harness routing, and nearby components for damage or contamination.
  3. Verify fuses and measure supply voltages (constant and switched 12 V) at the EHU connector with ignition ON. Repair any power faults.
  4. Check ground integrity: measure voltage drop between EHU ground and battery negative while operating. Repair poor grounds.
  5. With ignition ON, measure CAN‑H and CAN‑L voltages at the EHU connector. Compare to expected values in signal_params.
  6. Measure termination resistance between CAN‑H and CAN‑L. If open or far from ~60 Ω, locate missing/failed termination.
  7. Use a scope or CAN diagnostic tool to capture waveforms on CAN‑H and CAN‑L. Look for noise, missing frames, stuck dominant, or collisions.
  8. If an external short or fault is suspected, isolate sections: disconnect the EHU and see if the rest of the network recovers communication.
  9. If the bus is healthy and the EHU has correct power/ground but still won't respond, attempt a soft reboot or factory reset if supported by the manufacturer procedures.
  10. Check gateway/BCM for related codes and ensure it is correctly routing messages; verify that module software versions and coding are correct.
  11. If tests indicate EHU internal fault (no CAN transceiver activity, stuck lines when connected, or failed diagnostics), replace the EHU only after confirming wiring and other modules are good.
  12. After repair or replacement, clear codes and verify normal network communication and full functionality. Re-run tests to ensure no intermittent faults remain.

Likely causes

  • Power or ground fault at the EHU (most common)
  • Connector or wiring corrosion/loose pin on CAN lines
  • Failed EHU CAN transceiver or internal module fault
  • Open or shorted CAN termination
  • Gateway/BCM network routing fault or software mismatch

Fault status

⚠️ Status
No communication detected between the vehicle CAN network and the Entertainment Head Unit (EHU). The EHU is not responding on the expected CAN bus. Stored when expected CAN messages from the EHU are absent or the module fails to acknowledge network requests.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.5-4.0 hours
