Causes

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending DTCs from ABS, engine and body network modules using manufacturer-level scan tool (capture freeze frame and event counters)
  • Check vehicle service history for recent module replacement, reflashing, or battery disconnection
  • Check battery voltage and charging system; ensure stable supply during diagnostics/programming
  • Inspect ABS and accelerator module connectors, pins and earths for corrosion, damage or loose connections
  • Perform CAN bus physical checks: measure CAN high/low voltages (idle ~2.5 V each), check for short to battery/ground, and continuity between modules
  • Use dealer-level tools to view security/token status and attempt token read or handshake diagnostics

Signal parameters

  • CAN network: periodic heartbeat messages from ABS and accelerator control (typical intervals ~50–200 ms)
  • CAN physical layer idle voltages: CAN_H and CAN_L ~2.5 V (dominant state ~3.5 V/1.5 V)
  • Security handshake messages: seed/request and key/response frames between ABS, Smart Accelerator, and immobilizer/gateway
  • Message CRC or token field expected in security exchange (present/absent flag)
  • Error counters: TX/RX error counts and bus-off status for involved modules

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a JLR/IDS or equivalent OEM-level diagnostic tool and read all modules; record U2508 and any related codes and freeze-frame data.
  2. Confirm battery state-of-charge and ensure stable power (use charger if necessary).
  3. Inspect ABS and accelerator control physical connectors, pins and grounds; repair any corrosion or damage.
  4. Verify CAN bus physical integrity: measure CAN_H/CAN_L voltages, check for shorts/opens and verify termination resistances.
  5. Using OEM tool, check module security/token status and attempt retrieval of token or run built-in security handshake tests.
  6. If vehicle recently had module replacement or reflashing, verify correct VIN coding and perform required security/programming steps to write the token to the module(s).
  7. Update module software/firmware to latest calibrated levels per OEM procedures; re-run security/authentication programming if available.
  8. Clear DTCs and retest; perform road test and monitor for reappearance of U2508 and related communication faults.
  9. If fault persists after wiring, power and software checks, consider module bench testing or replacement of the ABS or Smart Accelerator control module following OEM programming and security procedures.
  10. Document all programming steps and verify immobilizer/gateway interactions as required by manufacturer.
  11. Note: Many fixes require manufacturer-level tools and security access; avoid repeated programming attempts without proper procedures.
