Causes

What to check

  • Read VIN stored in each module (ECM, BCM, instrument cluster, ABS, airbag, telematics)
  • Compare VINs against the vehicle's actual VIN (door jamb/title) for consistency
  • Check for other network/communication DTCs (U0100, U0401, etc.)
  • Inspect wiring, connectors, and power/ground to modules that report incorrect/missing VIN
  • Check vehicle service history for recent module replacement or software updates

Signal parameters

  • VIN string reported by each module (ECM, BCM, cluster, ABS, TCU, telematics)
  • CAN bus activity and error counters (CAN low/high voltages, bus errors)
  • Module wake/sleep status and supply voltages
  • Module part number and software/firmware version
  • U-codes and related communication fault counters

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Capture and record the U3002 fault and all other DTCs from every module using an OEM-level scan tool.
  2. Read the VIN stored in each module and note any modules with missing, blank, or mismatched VINs compared to the VIN plate.
  3. If VIN is missing or incorrect in a single module, inspect that module's power, ground, connector pin integrity, and wiring continuity.
  4. Check the CAN bus for continuity, proper termination, and voltage levels. Repair any wiring/connector faults and recheck communications.
  5. Review vehicle history for recent module replacement or reflash. If a module was replaced, confirm VIN programming procedures were completed.
  6. If communication faults persist, isolate by disconnecting suspected aftermarket modules, then retest.
  7. If a module has a corrupted VIN but hardware and wiring are good, reprogram the VIN into the affected module using OEM diagnostic/programming equipment per factory procedures.
  8. If reprogramming fails or the module does not accept VIN, consider module replacement and programming with correct VIN.
  9. After repairs/programming, clear codes, perform a full system scan, and verify VIN consistency across modules. Road test or key-cycle vehicle to ensure faults do not return.
  10. If issue persists, contact manufacturer technical support or dealer service for guidance, as some VIN programming may be restricted.
