Causes

  • Open, shorted, corroded, or damaged wiring or connector to the mixing valve
  • Valve actuator failure (motor, stepper, or servo)
  • Valve mechanically stuck or seized from corrosion or debris
  • Blocked coolant passages or collapsed hose preventing valve movement
  • Low coolant level or air trapped in cooling/heater circuit

  • Engine running warmer or cooler than expected during warm-up
  • Unexpected temperature swings or ineffective temperature control
  • Audible clicking/grinding near valve when commanded (or silence when noise expected)
  • Possible diagnostic trouble codes or communication errors logged on CAN bus

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame data and any additional stored codes with a capable scan tool
  • Check coolant level and inspect for air in the cooling/heater circuit
  • Visually inspect wiring harness and connector for corrosion, pin damage, or water intrusion
  • Attempt commanded valve exercise with scan tool and observe valve movement and vehicle response
  • Back-probe connector to measure supply voltage and ground while commanding the valve
  • Measure actuator resistance and compare with service specification

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage: typically near battery voltage (≈12 V) at valve power pin when key on
  • Ground continuity: near 0 Ω to chassis ground at valve ground pin
  • Control signal: PWM duty cycle or discrete on/off command from module (0–100% duty typical)
  • Position/feedback signal: analog voltage (example 0.5–4.5 V) or digital position counts depending on design
  • Actuator coil/brush resistance: manufacturer-specific ohm value (check service data)
  • CAN/BUS messages: valve position and status messages when present on vehicle network

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify customer complaint and confirm U3574 is current or stored. Record freeze frame and related codes.
  2. Inspect coolant level, top off if low, and inspect for air in system. Correct low-fluid or air issues and retest.
  3. Visually inspect valve, harness, and connector for damage, corrosion, water ingress, or pin issues.
  4. With a scan tool, command the valve through its range while observing valve movement. Note any lack of motion or abnormal noises.
  5. Back-probe connector: verify battery voltage at power pin and continuity to ground while commanding. If no power, trace and repair fuse/relay/wiring.
  6. Measure actuator resistance and any position sensor voltages vs. service specification. Replace valve if out of range.
  7. If electrical inputs are correct but valve does not move, remove and bench-test actuator where practical or replace valve assembly.
  8. If communication faults appear, check CAN bus for wiring shorts/opens and other modules for complaints; repair network issues.
  9. After repair, clear codes, perform relearns/calibrations if required by service manual, and road-test to confirm correct operation.
  10. If intermittent: document conditions when fault occurred and consider wiring flex tests and extended road test.
