Causes

  • Check related fuses and power/ground circuits for continuity and proper voltage
  • Backprobe control and power pins at the regulator and observe voltage/duty with key ON and engine running (if safe)
  • Measure regulator coil resistance with connector disconnected (engine off)

Signal parameters

  • Typical supply/power to regulator: key ON ~12 V (verify on vehicle)
  • Control signal: PWM duty or voltage from ECM — varies 0%–100% duty or 0–12 V depending on system (expected to respond to commands, not remain stuck high)
  • Coil resistance (approximate): often 2–30 ohms — model dependent (measure at room temperature)
  • Expected fuel rail pressure response: pressure should change when regulator is commanded (see vehicle service data for exact kPa/bar/psi values)
  • Cranking/idle battery voltage should remain >11.5 V during tests

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Capture freeze frame and all related codes (P0091, P0093, P0087, P0190, etc.) and note engine conditions when fault set.
  2. Verify battery voltage and good ground; poor supply can cause spurious signals.
  3. Visually inspect regulator, connector and harness for corrosion, fuel contamination, melted insulation, or pin damage; repair visible faults.
  4. With ignition OFF, disconnect regulator connector and measure coil resistance across regulator pins; compare to specification. If open or shorted, replace regulator.
  5. Inspect fuse(s)/relay(s) for regulator supply circuit; verify constant 12 V at power pin with key ON.
  6. Reconnect and backprobe regulator control wire; with key ON (engine off) measure control voltage. Start engine and observe control signal with oscilloscope or scan tool: verify PWM duty cycles change with commands and not stuck at high voltage/duty.
  7. Perform a controlled actuator test using a scan tool (command regulator) while monitoring fuel rail pressure; if commanded change does not change pressure, suspect regulator or wiring.
  8. If control wire is stuck high, isolate by disconnecting connector and measuring if voltage remains on harness — if voltage disappears when disconnected, suspect regulator; if voltage remains, suspect short to battery or ECM output stuck.
  9. Check continuity to ground and look for short to battery between control wire and other circuits. Repair wiring as necessary.
  10. If wiring and regulator check good, consider ECM driver fault; perform ECM bench tests or replacement only after verifying harness and component health.
  11. After repairs, clear codes, perform relearn procedures if required, and road test to confirm repair. Note: relieve fuel pressure and follow safety protocols before removing components.

  • Corroded or damaged connector causing intermittent high voltage reading
  • Failed regulator with internal short/coil malfunction
