  5. Operate relay manually (or energize from fused battery) to see if pump runs. If pump runs when directly powered, suspect wiring/relay/PCM.
  6. Measure voltage at pump while cranking and while running. If voltage drops significantly under load, inspect for high resistance connections or grounding issues.
  7. Disconnect pump and measure motor resistance and current when directly powered (bench test) to determine internal pump fault.
  8. Wiggle wiring and connectors while monitoring voltage/current to reproduce intermittent faults.
  9. If wiring and pump check good, test PCM driver output for continuity to ground/switching (use appropriate scope or DVOM only per manufacturer procedure). Replace PCM only after eliminating wiring, relay, and pump as causes.
  10. Repair or replace failed components (wiring, connectors, relay, pump). Clear codes and retest drive cycle to ensure fault does not return.

  • Relay stuck open or contact failure
  • Corroded connector at in-tank pump module
  • High resistance ground causing voltage drop under load
  • Pump motor seized or shorted causing circuit fault
