Causes

  • Clogged reductant injector/nozzle
  • Clogged or contaminated inlet filter/strainer
  • Crystallized DEF deposits in lines, injector, or pump
  • Kinked, collapsed or blocked supply/return lines
  • DEF frozen / low temperature without functioning heater
  • DEF pump mechanical failure or low pump output

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) / Check Engine Light illuminated
  • Reduced or disabled aftertreatment functions or engine derate in some vehicles
  • DEF system warnings (low quality/flow/heater) displayed
  • Difficulty completing emissions-related regeneration events
  • Audible unusual pump noise or no pump noise when commanded
  • DTC returns consistently when reductant dosing is commanded

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and live data with a capable scan tool; record reductant flow, pressure, pump current, injector duty and temperature
  • Verify DEF level, concentration and condition (no visible contamination or foul odor)
  • Inspect external lines, fittings, connectors and visible injector for deposits, kinks or damage
  • Check inline filter/strainer and replace or clean if contaminated
  • Check power, ground, fuses and relays for pump and heater circuits
  • Command pump and injector with scan tool while monitoring pump voltage and current

Signal parameters

  • Reductant flow rate (ml/min or L/hr) — commanded vs measured
  • Reductant pressure (kPa or psi) at pump or injector
  • Pump supply voltage (V)
  • Pump current (A)
  • Injector duty cycle or pulse width (%) or ms
  • Reductant temperature (°C / °F)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify DTC and freeze frame data. Check for related codes (pump, heater, sensors). Note operating conditions when code set.
  2. Confirm DEF level and quality. Top up with correct certified reductant if low or contaminated; avoid diluting with water.
  3. Visually inspect hoses, fittings, injector and pump for damage, kinks, leaks or external deposits. Replace damaged hoses.
  4. Inspect and/or replace inlet strainer and any inline filters. Remove visible crystallized deposits from accessible components.
  5. Check fuses, relays, power and ground for pump/heater/sensors. Repair wiring/connectors as needed.
  6. Using a scan tool, command the pump and injector while monitoring pump voltage and current and commanded flow. Compare measured values to spec.
  7. Measure flow or pressure at the dosing point per manufacturer procedure. Low/no flow with correct command indicates mechanical blockage or pump failure.
  8. If flow is intermittent or pump current is abnormal, bench-test or replace pump assembly. If current normal and flow low, suspect injector/nozzle or restriction downstream.
  9. Remove and inspect the injector/nozzle and distribution block; clean or replace if fouled or damaged. Replace lines with heavy crystallization.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform functional test/road test under conditions that previously produced the fault. Re-check for recurrence and monitor live data.
  11. If code persists after replacing suspected components, consult manufacturer service information or technical bulletins for calibration, module updates, or advanced diagnostics.

Likely causes

  • Clogged injector nozzle or distribution block due to crystallization
  • Inlet strainer or inline filter blocked by particulates
  • Pump worn or electrically failing (low current or no output)
  • Heater failure causing reduced flow in cold conditions
  • Faulty flow or pressure sensor giving incorrect low-flow reading
  • Damaged or pinched reductant hose restricting flow

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Reductant system flow restricted — delivered flow below commanded threshold. Inspect DEF quality, lines, filters, pump, injector/nozzle, heater and sensor circuits. Do not assume a single failed component without further verification.
