Generic B — Body

Driver Frontal Stage 1 Deployment Control

Brand: Generic
Type: B — Body
AI status
Completed
ready
Completed 100%
Page language: EN

Causes

  • Open or short in driver airbag (squib) circuit
  • Poor or corroded connector at driver airbag or SRS module
  • Faulty clock spring/spiral cable
  • Damaged wiring harness (chafing, pinched, water intrusion)
  • Faulty SRS (airbag) control module
  • Low battery voltage or poor battery/ground connection during system checks

Symptoms

  • SRS/airbag warning light illuminated on instrument panel
  • Possible disablement of driver frontal stage 1 deployment (system fallback)
  • Stored SRS B0001 and possibly additional related airbag codes
  • Limited or no driver airbag deployment capability until repaired

What to check

  • Read and record all SRS codes and freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool
  • Visually inspect steering wheel, airbag connector, clock spring, and wiring for damage/corrosion
  • Inspect SRS control module connector and ground points
  • Check battery voltage and main grounds before performing tests
  • Follow manufacturer procedure to power down SRS (disconnect battery and wait specified time) before touching airbag connectors

Signal parameters

  • Driver squib continuity / resistance (open or short indication)
  • Circuit voltage during SRS self-test (module supply voltage present)
  • SRS module diagnostic status and readiness flags
  • Ground circuit integrity to SRS module
  • Presence/absence of deploy command in module data (diagnostic only)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use an OEM-capable scan tool to read/record all SRS codes, freeze frame, and live data. Note any other related codes.
  2. Power down SRS per vehicle service manual (disconnect battery and wait the specified time) before touching airbag connectors or steering wheel components.
  3. Visually inspect steering column, clock spring area, driver airbag connector, and associated wiring for corrosion, damage, or disconnection. Repair obvious wiring/connectors.
  4. With the battery still disconnected, disconnect the driver airbag connector at the steering wheel and measure squib continuity/resistance per service manual. Compare to specification. (Do not attempt resistance checks with connectors connected to the live module.)
  5. Check continuity between the driver airbag connector pins and the SRS module pins to locate opens or high-resistance sections. Repair any damaged wiring or connectors.
  6. Inspect and test the clock spring/spiral cable for internal opens or shorts. Replace clock spring if faulty.
  7. Reconnect everything, restore battery power, clear codes, and perform an SRS system self-test with the scan tool. Verify that B0001 does not return and that SRS warning light behaves correctly.
  8. If the fault persists after wiring and component checks, evaluate or replace the SRS control module per manufacturer procedure (module replacement may require programming/initialization).
  9. After repairs, confirm all airbag-related systems are operational and follow any required calibration/initialization steps and safety checks.

Likely causes

  • Connector disconnected or corroded at driver airbag
  • Clock spring internal failure causing intermittent/open circuit to steering wheel squib
  • Shorted or high-resistance squib (airbag) in the driver's seat/steering wheel
  • Wiring harness damage between steering wheel and SRS module

Fault status

⚠️ Status
SRS detected a fault in the driver frontal stage 1 deployment control circuit. The driver airbag stage 1 firing circuit is out of expected parameters and the SRS lamp may be illuminated. Service required; do not ignore.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0 - 3.0 hours
