Control of the installation of the right curtain 1

Causes

  • Open or short in the right curtain airbag (squib) wiring harness
  • Corroded, disconnected or damaged connector at the curtain airbag or roof harness
  • Faulty right curtain airbag module/squib
  • Faulty Airbag/Restraints Control Module (ACM/RCM) or poor module power/ground
  • Intermittent wiring damage from roof/door movement or previous repairs
  • Accessory or body module communication error (CAN/LIN) affecting SRS data

Symptoms

  • SRS/airbag warning lamp illuminated on instrument cluster
  • Stored DTC B0029 in airbag/BCM module memory
  • Right side curtain airbag may be disabled (deployment inhibited)
  • Possible communication errors with other airbag modules or related B‑codes

What to check

  • Read all SRS/BCM/ACM stored codes and freeze frame data with a capable scan tool
  • Check SRS warning lamp status and note any other related codes
  • Visually inspect right roofline, A‑pillar and door hinge area wiring for chafing, pinch, or corrosion
  • Inspect connectors at the right curtain airbag and adjacent modules for corrosion, bent pins or loose terminals
  • Verify good battery voltage and engine ground; low voltage can cause false SRS faults
  • Confirm no recent body repairs in roof/headliner area that could have disturbed wiring

Signal parameters

  • Curtain squib continuity: intact squib typically shows a low resistance (generally under a few ohms) — open circuit shows very high/OL resistance
  • Short to power: near 0 Ω or battery voltage present at squib connector when module not commanding is indication of short
  • Short to ground: near 0 Ω to chassis ground when squib disconnected indicates short to ground
  • CAN/LIN communication: normal module comms should be present; loss of comms may accompany the DTC

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: disable vehicle battery and follow manufacturer SRS deactivation procedure and wait the specified time before touching SRS components
  2. Connect a manufacturer-capable SRS scan tool. Read and record all SRS/BCM codes and freeze frame data. Note whether B0029 is present alone or with other codes.
  3. With battery disabled, visually inspect the right curtain airbag harness, connectors, and roofline harness for damage, pinched areas or corrosion. Pay attention to A‑pillar/door hinge routing and seat belt anchor areas.
  4. Re-enable power per safety procedures only when required for testing. Using the scan tool, attempt to perform module self-tests and view live/inactive sensor/squib status if supported.
  5. Disable battery again. Disconnect the right curtain airbag connector at the module end and measure squib resistance at the harness connector. Compare to manufacturer specification (low ohm value expected).
  6. If open or out of spec, trace wiring back toward the module, checking continuity and for short to ground/power (with harness connectors disconnected). Repair any damaged wiring or replace corroded connectors.
  7. If wiring and connector are good and squib resistance is out of spec, replace the right curtain airbag module (squib). After replacement, clear codes and perform recommended SRS system checks.
  8. If squib and wiring check OK but the ACM/RCM reports the fault or communication errors persist, consider module programming/repair or replacement per manufacturer procedures.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform a full SRS system scan and self-test. Confirm the SRS lamp extinguishes and B0029 does not return.
  10. Note: Follow all manufacturer service manual instructions and safety precautions when handling SRS components; improper handling can cause accidental deployment and injury.

Likely causes

  • Damaged/loose connector at the right curtain airbag (most common)
  • Open circuit in curtain squib wiring or broken conductor in roof harness
  • Faulty curtain airbag squib/module

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored when the airbag control module detects an electrical or control fault in the right curtain airbag circuit (right curtain 1); SRS warning lamp will be set and the curtain airbag may be inhibited.
