PPS passenger detection error

Type: B — Body

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Faulty passenger presence sensor (seat mat or module)
  • Damaged or corroded connector or wiring in seat harness
  • Poor ground or supply voltage to the sensor/module
  • Water intrusion or physical damage to the sensor mat
  • Aftermarket seat covers, cushions or accessories interfering with sensor
  • Incomplete or failed passenger presence system calibration/relearn

Symptoms

  • SRS/airbag warning lamp illuminated
  • Passenger airbag status indicator may show OFF when occupied or may be unavailable
  • Inability to enable/disable passenger airbag automatically
  • Stored DTC B0092 and possibly related occupant-sensing codes
  • Diagnostic tool shows inconsistent passenger presence status or no communication with PPS module

What to check

  • Read and record DTCs and freeze-frame data with an appropriate scan tool
  • Visually inspect passenger seat, seat cushion, seat covers and under-seat area for foreign objects, water damage, or debris
  • Inspect connectors under the passenger seat for corrosion, bent pins, or loose mating
  • Check wiring harness for chafing, broken wires, or damaged insulation from seat movement
  • Verify no aftermarket seat covers, cushions or child seats are interfering with the sensor
  • Confirm battery voltage and good chassis ground at the seat harness ground point

Signal parameters

  • Passenger presence/sensor raw value (voltage or resistance) reported by PPS
  • Occupant classification status (e.g., Empty/Child/Adult/Unknown) from occupant sensing module
  • Supply voltage to sensor (typically 5 V reference)
  • Sensor ground continuity
  • Seat module/RCM CAN bus communication status and errors
  • Freeze frame: vehicle speed, ignition status, seat belt state, sensor reading at fault time

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect suitable SRS-capable scan tool, read and record B0092 and any related DTCs and freeze frame data.
  2. Visually inspect the passenger seat, cushion, connectors and harness for contamination, damage, corrosion or foreign objects. Remove any aftermarket covers or cushions and retest.
  3. With the connector exposed, check for bent pins, corrosion and secure mating. Clean and reseat connectors as required.
  4. Verify sensor supply and ground at the PPS connector (backprobe): confirm reference voltage and ground continuity per manufacturer specification.
  5. Measure the passenger presence sensor (seat mat) resistance or signal while changing load (sitting/standing) and compare to expected values from repair information.
  6. Wiggle the harness and connectors while monitoring live data for intermittent changes that reproduce the fault.
  7. If wiring and connectors are good, verify/perform any required occupant classification system calibration or relearn procedure per service manual.
  8. If sensor/module still fails tests, replace the passenger presence sensor/module and secure connectors; use only approved replacement parts and follow torque/fastening instructions.
  9. After repair, clear codes and verify the system returns to normal operation and the passenger airbag enable/disable logic behaves correctly. Recheck for DTCs after a test drive if required.
  10. If fault persists, escalate to RCM/airbag module communication diagnosis or consult manufacturer technical service information.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector under the passenger seat
  • Damaged sensor mat from wear or liquid spill
  • Aftermarket seat cover or object on seat causing incorrect detection
  • Failed passenger presence module
  • Failed/incorrect relearn after seat removal or repair

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Passenger Presence Sensor error detected by the occupant classification/passenger sensing system. The system may disable or incorrectly control the passenger airbag until fault is repaired.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-2.5 hours
