Causes

  • Faulty recirculation switch (mechanical or electrical failure)
  • Open or short in switch wiring or connector corrosion/damage
  • Poor connector pin contact or bent pins at switch or HVAC control module
  • Blown fuse or poor ground for the HVAC control circuit
  • Faulty HVAC control module or related body control module
  • Software/firmware issue or intermittent CAN/LIN communication fault

Symptoms

  • Recirculation mode not engaging or stuck in fresh-air mode
  • Recirculation indicator on dash does not illuminate or flickers
  • HVAC behaves intermittently when pressing recirculation button
  • Related HVAC functions may operate incorrectly or show an error in the instrument cluster
  • DTC B1014 stored in module memory

What to check

  • Read current and stored codes and freeze-frame data with an OEM-level scanner
  • Attempt to operate recirculation switch while monitoring live data/inputs for the HVAC control module
  • Inspect switch and wiring harness visually for damage, corrosion, water ingress, or loose connectors
  • Check relevant fuses and ground points for the HVAC control circuit
  • Backprobe the switch connector and measure voltage and signal changes while switching
  • Verify module power and ground at the HVAC/control module connector

Signal parameters

  • Switch open: expected open-circuit or defined logical ‘off’ signal (depends on vehicle), typically near battery voltage or pulled to Vb through resistor
  • Switch closed: expected continuity to ground or a defined logical ‘on’ voltage change (0–12 V range depending on design)
  • Resistance across switch contacts when pressed: near 0 Ω if mechanical closed-contact switch
  • Diagnostic tool live-data: recirculation input bit should toggle when button pressed

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect an OEM-level scan tool; record and clear codes, then attempt to re-create the fault. Note freeze-frame/live-data when fault sets.
  2. Visually inspect recirculation switch, bezel, and harness for damage, moisture, or loose connectors. Repair any obvious wiring issues.
  3. With ignition ON, backprobe the switch connector. Operate the switch and observe voltage/resistance change on the signal pin vs ground and vs battery. Compare to expected values in the wiring diagram.
  4. Check fuses and module power/ground circuits for proper voltage and continuity. Repair any open grounds or power faults.
  5. If wiring and power/ground are good, unplug the switch and measure resistance across switch terminals (if applicable) to verify mechanical contact operation. Replace switch if out of spec.
  6. If switch tests good but module input does not change when switch operated, inspect/repair wiring between switch and HVAC module or test for CAN/LIN communication faults per wiring diagram.
  7. If wiring and communications are good but module input remains incorrect, consider HVAC control module or body control module fault—verify with OEM diagnostic procedures before replacement.
  8. After repair, clear codes and verify correct operation over time and in different conditions to ensure fault does not recur.

Likely causes

  • Failed recirculation switch
  • Corroded/loose connector at switch
  • Damaged harness between switch and HVAC module
