Causes

  • Faulty accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor
  • Damaged wiring harness or connector (open, short to ground or battery, corrosion)
  • Poor power supply or missing 5V/3.3V reference and/or bad ground
  • Mechanical binding or wear in the pedal assembly
  • Intermittent connector contact from vibration or moisture
  • Faulty engine control / powertrain control module (least common)

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) / warning light illuminated
  • Reduced engine power or limp-home mode
  • Poor or inconsistent throttle response and hesitation
  • Cruise control disabled
  • Possible hard-start or no-throttle response in extreme cases
  • Stored DTC(s) related to accelerator/throttle/pedal correlation

What to check

  • Read and record all stored and pending DTCs and freeze frame data with a scan tool
  • Inspect pedal sensor connector for corrosion, bent pins, water ingress and secure fit
  • Visually inspect wiring harness along routing for chafing, breaks, or pinched sections
  • Back-probe sensor connector to verify reference voltage, signal(s) and ground with ignition ON
  • Check live APP sensor values while moving pedal (scan tool) for smooth, linear change and correlation between sensor channels
  • Perform wiggle test on wiring and connector while observing live data for intermittents

Signal parameters

  • Reference supply typically ~5.0 V (or vehicle-specific 3.3 V) to APP sensor — present with key ON
  • Signal voltage range for each sensor channel typically ~0.5 V (idle) to ~4.5 V (full pedal)
  • Two or three sensor channels are common; channels must correlate and not be identical
  • No open circuit (infinite resistance) or short to battery/ground on signal lines
  • Live sensor values should change smoothly with pedal travel (no sudden jumps or dropouts)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a full-function scan tool. Read and save all codes and freeze frame. Note whether other throttle/pedal codes are present.
  2. Inspect pedal area and connector for damage, contamination or loose mounting. Repair or clean as necessary.
  3. With ignition ON (engine off), back-probe connector: verify presence of reference voltage, sensor signal(s), and ground. Compare to expected values.
  4. Observe live APP sensor voltages while slowly moving pedal from rest to full travel. Verify smooth, monotonic change and that multiple channels correlate and are not duplicated.
  5. Perform wiggle/stress test on harness and connector while watching live data for intermittent faults. Repair wiring/connector faults found.
  6. If reference voltage missing or unstable, trace and test supply/ground circuit to PCM and check PCM grounds and fuses.
  7. If wiring and power/ground are good but signals are out of range or non-linear, replace the accelerator pedal position sensor.
  8. After repair, clear codes and perform a functional test with a scan tool; confirm codes do not return and vehicle returns to normal throttle behavior.
  9. If code persists after sensor/wiring replacement, consider PCM input circuit fault and consult manufacturer procedures for module testing or reprogramming.

Likely causes

  • Corroded or loose connector at pedal sensor
  • Broken or chafed wiring between pedal sensor and PCM
  • Sensor internal failure causing out-of-range voltage/values
  • Contaminated or misaligned pedal potentiometer or Hall sensor
  • Blown/weak reference voltage regulator or bad ground on module
