HUMMER B — Body

SRS Control Module Internal Fault

Brand: HUMMER
Type: B — Body
AI status
Completed
ready
Completed 100%
Page language: EN

Causes

  • Internal SRS control module hardware or software failure
  • Corrupted module memory or firmware
  • Intermittent or low power supply to the SRS module (battery/ignition feed)
  • Poor or missing ground(s) to the SRS module
  • Damaged or corroded connector(s) at the module
  • Shorts or opens in airbag squib wiring causing internal protection trips

Symptoms

  • Illuminated SRS/airbag warning lamp on dash
  • Possible accompanying stability/traction lights if networks are affected
  • Airbag deployment inhibited or SRS system disabled message
  • Diagnostic trouble codes related to SRS and communication stored in memory
  • Occasional or permanent loss of communication with SRS module via scan tool

What to check

  • Read and record all stored SRS and network codes with a capable scan tool (freeze frame, event data)
  • Check battery voltage with key ON and engine OFF; confirm stable 12–14 V supply
  • Inspect SRS module connector for corrosion, bent pins, or water intrusion
  • Verify good chassis and module ground(s) with low-ohm measurement
  • Attempt communication with the module using an OEM-capable scan tool; note any communication errors
  • Check CAN/LIN bus message presence and termination if communications-related codes present

Signal parameters

  • VBAT supply to SRS module: nominal 12–14 V (key ON)
  • Module ground: near 0 Ω to chassis reference
  • CAN bus differential voltages present on bus lines when key ON (approx. 2.5 V idle per line, expected differential ~0 V idle and active signaling)
  • SRS module self-test status flags and diagnostic readiness bits (as reported by OEM scan tool)
  • Stored event/crash data presence (yes/no) and fault counters

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: follow manufacturer safety procedures for SRS work. Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait required time to de-energize SRS capacitors before touching airbag wiring or module.
  2. Use a factory-capable scan tool to read all SRS and network codes; save reports and freeze frame data.
  3. Clear codes and perform ignition cycles to see whether B1051 returns and whether additional codes appear.
  4. Measure battery voltage at the SRS module connector with key ON; if low or unstable, charge or test battery and charging system.
  5. Inspect module connectors and pins for corrosion, bent pins, pushed-out terminals, or water. Repair or replace damaged connectors.
  6. Verify module grounds: disconnect connector and measure continuity to chassis ground; repair as needed.
  7. Check CAN/LIN communication: verify bus is present and other modules respond. Repair any bus wiring faults or incorrect terminations.
  8. Perform continuity and resistance checks on airbag squib circuits per factory procedure (with battery disconnected). Look for shorts to ground or opens that could cause internal module protection to set.
  9. If no external cause is found and communication/power/grounds are good, suspect internal module failure. Follow OEM policy for SRS module replacement, reprogramming, and crash data handling.
  10. After repair or replacement, clear codes, perform recommended system tests and calibrations, and confirm the SRS warning lamp extinguishes and scanned self-tests pass.

Likely causes

  • Failed internal component on SRS control module (capacitor, processor, solder joint)
  • Low or unstable battery voltage during a self-test
  • Loose or corroded connector pins at the module
  • Shorted squib or short to ground that caused module internal protection to set a fault
  • Software corruption after a previous service attempt or crash data memory fault

Fault status

⚠️ Status
SRS Control Module Internal Fault — module has detected an internal error. SRS system may be disabled until the fault is resolved.
🔴 Repair difficulty: Hard
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1-3 hours
