Causes

  • Failed latch position sensor (open/short or internal failure)
  • Corroded or loose connector at the latch or control module
  • Damaged wiring harness (chafing, broken conductor, water ingress)
  • Mechanical latch binding, misalignment or obstruction
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying the latch/sensor
  • Faulty body/convenience control module or software error

Symptoms

  • Convertible top will not stow or deploy or stops mid-cycle
  • Driver information message or warning lamp about the roof/latch
  • Top appears unlocked when it should be locked (or vice versa)
  • Audible clicking/attempt but no movement at latch
  • Intermittent operation of convertible top or only working after manual manipulation

What to check

  • Scan vehicle and confirm B1078 plus any related DTCs; record freeze-frame/live-data while operating top
  • Visually inspect latch, sensor and connector for corrosion, water, damage or foreign objects
  • Check fuses and relays for the convertible-top circuit
  • Backprobe latch sensor connector with top operated; observe signal changes and reference voltage
  • Perform continuity/resistance check from sensor connector to control module; wiggle wiring to replicate fault
  • Check latch mechanical movement and alignment; lubricate and free any binding components

Signal parameters

  • Sensor type varies by model: commonly a simple position switch or hall effect sensor
  • Reference supply typically 5 V (logic) or switched 12 V — consult vehicle manual before testing
  • Latched (closed) often reads near 0 V (ground) or a low resistance; unlatched often shows reference voltage or open circuit
  • Expected supply voltage: approx. 11–14 V for 12 V supply circuits; reference 5 V for logic circuits
  • Open-circuit resistance may read as infinite (O.L.); closed switch resistance typically

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record DTCs and vehicle information. Note any other roof or body DTCs.
  2. Visually inspect latch area and connector for corrosion, loose pins, water contamination, or physical damage.
  3. With a diagnostic tool connected, command the roof cycle while watching live data for latch position sensor state changes.
  4. Backprobe the sensor connector: verify reference voltage (if present), ground return and signal transition when latch moves. Compare to expected values in manufacturer data.
  5. If no signal change, unplug connector and check for continuity between sensor body/terminals and control module harness; wiggle test for intermittent faults.
  6. Measure sensor resistance (if switch-type) or voltage output (if active sensor). Replace sensor if readings are outside spec or inconsistent.
  7. Inspect and repair any damaged wiring or replace corroded connectors. Protect repaired areas from moisture ingress.
  8. Verify latch mechanical operation: free, adjust or replace latch if it physically cannot reach the correct position to trigger the sensor.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform multiple roof cycles to confirm proper operation and that no DTCs return.
  10. If wiring and sensor check good but fault persists, consider module-level diagnostics or software updates per dealer procedures.

Likely causes

  • Sensor failure at the latch
  • Connector corrosion or water intrusion at the latch
  • Wiring open/short between latch and control module
  • Latch mechanical binding preventing correct sensor operation

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Latch position sensor circuit fault detected — control module not receiving expected latch open/closed signal; convertible-top operation may be inhibited and a warning message displayed.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
