Causes

  • Failed or seized hood latch motor/actuator
  • Open or shorted wiring to the motor (power or ground)
  • Corroded or loose connector / poor pin contact
  • Blown fuse or tripped circuit protection for the convertible top system
  • Mechanical binding or obstruction in the latch or linkage
  • Control module or software fault sending incorrect outputs

Symptoms

  • Convertible roof rear quarter hood will not latch or unlatch
  • Audible clicking or high-pitched whine from the motor area
  • Intermittent operation or only partial movement of the lid
  • Warning or message on dash related to convertible top or latch
  • Fuse repeatedly blows or protection trips when trying to operate

What to check

  • Scan vehicle for stored body/CAN module codes and freeze frame data
  • Visually inspect motor, latch, linkage and surrounding area for damage, debris or water
  • Inspect connectors for corrosion, bent pins and secure fit
  • Check relevant fuses and any relay(s) for the convertible top/actuator circuit
  • With key on, command the latch and observe/measure voltage at motor connector
  • Measure continuity/insulation of wiring between motor and control module

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage at motor when commanded: ~11–14 V (vehicle battery voltage expected)
  • No voltage at motor when not commanded (approx. 0 V)
  • Motor coil resistance: typically low (a few ohms) — compare to manufacturer spec
  • Current draw: motor draws higher current at stall; compare measured draw with spec to detect seizure or short
  • Module command signal may be switched power or ground — verify with wiring diagram

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all stored codes and freeze frame data from body and convertible-top modules.
  2. Visually inspect actuator, latch, connectors and harness for damage, water, corrosion or obstructions.
  3. Check fuses/relays for the convertible top/latch circuit; replace if blown and retest to see if fault returns.
  4. With a helper and appropriate safety (parked, key on, ignition mode as required), command the latch while observing. Listen for motor noise and note movement.
  5. Probe the motor connector while commanding the latch: verify there is proper supply (≈battery voltage) and a good ground. If no command voltage, test back to the control module.
  6. If command voltage present but motor does not run, disconnect motor and check coil resistance. If open or out-of-spec, replace actuator.
  7. If motor receives voltage but only hums or stalls, check current draw (use clamp ammeter) to detect excessive stall current (indicates mechanical binding or failed motor).
  8. Inspect and free any jammed linkage or latch components; lubricate pivot points as recommended.
  9. Repair or replace damaged wiring/connectors. After repairs clear codes and perform convertible-top/close/open relearn cycles as required by manufacturer.
  10. If wiring and motor test good but module does not command properly, investigate/reprogram or replace the control module per factory procedure.

Likely causes

  • Actuator motor has failed or is mechanically seized
  • Damaged or corroded connector causing intermittent power/ground
  • Wiring harness chafing or broken conductor to the motor
  • Latch mechanism is jammed or hard to move, causing motor overload

Fault status

⚠️ Status
