Causes

  • Failed bulb or LED module (open or internal driver fault)
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector at sidemarker
  • Open circuit or short in harness between lamp and body control module (BCM)
  • Poor or high-resistance ground at lamp or chassis
  • Blown fuse or protection device for exterior lighting circuit
  • Faulty body control module / lighting module or incorrect module programming

Symptoms

  • Left rear sidemarker lamp does not illuminate with parking/marker lights
  • Intermittent operation of left rear sidemarker
  • Instrument panel message or lamp fault stored (B1118)
  • Possible other exterior lights unaffected or flickering if wiring/ground issues present

What to check

  • Read and record DTC(s) and freeze-frame data with a diagnostic scan tool
  • Visual inspection of left rear sidemarker lamp, socket/module, connector and wiring for damage or corrosion
  • Check related exterior lighting fuse(s) and replace if blown
  • Activate parking/marker lights and observe lamp operation while an assistant watches the connector
  • Measure voltage at the sidemarker connector with lights ON and engine running; check ground continuity to chassis
  • Wiggle harness and connector while observing lamp/scan data for intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage at lamp connector with lights ON: ~12.0–14.5 V (battery/resting voltage may be lower)
  • Expected lamp current: incandescent sidemarkers typically ~0.1–0.5 A; LED modules typically 10–200 mA depending on design
  • Ground resistance from lamp ground to chassis:
  • If BCM/PWM controlled: output may be a switched/PWM signal; frequency and duty vary by model (refer to service manual)
  • Open-circuit: infinite resistance between connector pin and BCM output; short-to-ground: near 0 Ω

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm B1118 with a diagnostic scanner; note related codes and continuity/freeze data.
  2. Visually inspect left rear sidemarker lamp/LED module, lens, socket and connector for corrosion, water ingress, bent pins or damage.
  3. Check exterior lighting fuses and any related relay; replace as needed.
  4. With parking/marker lights ON, measure DC voltage at the lamp connector supply pin relative to chassis ground. Voltage should be ~12–14.5 V. If no voltage, proceed to wiring/BCM checks.
  5. Measure continuity of the ground circuit from lamp ground pin to chassis ground; repair high-resistance connections.
  6. If supply voltage present but lamp does not light, remove lamp/module and bench-test it with a fused 12 V source (obey polarity for LEDs). Replace if faulty.
  7. If lamp works on bench but not in vehicle, perform continuity test from lamp connector to BCM output pin; check for short-to-power or short-to-ground.
  8. If BCM output is missing or erratic, use scanner to command the output (if supported) and observe response; check BCM power, grounds and related inputs. Consult wiring diagram for pin locations before probing module connectors.
  9. Repair wiring, connector, ground or lamp/module as found. Reassemble, clear DTCs, and verify function under all lighting modes.
  10. If wiring and lamp are good and BCM output is confirmed faulty, follow OEM procedures for BCM repair/reprogramming/replacement.

Likely causes

  • Burned-out or failed sidemarker lamp/LED module
  • Corroded or disconnected lamp connector or ground
  • Open or damaged wiring between rear lamp and BCM
