Causes

  • Failed or seized window regulator or motor
  • Faulty window switch or touch sensor
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay in the window power circuit
  • Damaged wiring, corroded connectors or poor ground at the door harness
  • Water ingress or mechanical obstruction in the window mechanism
  • Faulty body control module (BCM) or window control module software/communications

Symptoms

  • Window will not move up or down or moves intermittently
  • Slow or noisy window operation; grinding or binding noises
  • Window stops mid-travel or is misaligned
  • One-touch/auto up-down not functioning or partial operation
  • Related warning message or door module fault displayed on diagnostic tool

What to check

  • Retrieve full DTC list and freeze-frame data with a compatible scan tool
  • Verify battery voltage is stable (12 V+) during tests
  • Check fuses and relays for the window circuit and replace or test as needed
  • Operate window from master and individual switches to isolate switch vs motor
  • Inspect door wiring harness and connectors for corrosion, pin damage, or water ingress
  • Listen for motor noise when operation is commanded; note motor response

Signal parameters

  • Motor supply voltage: ~11–14 V when switch is actuated
  • Motor current draw: typical 2–15 A depending on vehicle and load; stalled or seized motors draw higher current
  • Switch signal: logic level change when pressed (consult vehicle manual), often pulled to ground or +12 V
  • Position sensor/potentiometer: ~0.5–4.5 V sweep for travel-position sensors (if fitted)
  • CAN bus idle voltage: ~2.5 V on CAN_H and CAN_L differential nominal; LIN bus idle ~0–12 V depending on protocol

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect diagnostic tool, read and record all stored and pending DTCs and freeze-frame data.
  2. Attempt window operation while monitoring live data and observe behavior (from master and door switch).
  3. Inspect fuses/relays for continuity; replace if faulty and retest operation.
  4. Visually inspect door connector and wiring loom for damage, corrosion or chafing; repair as required.
  5. Test switch operation: verify continuity or correct signal to the module when actuated.
  6. Measure motor supply and ground at the motor connector while commanding the window; confirm ~12 V and good ground.
  7. If supply is present but motor does not run, bench-test motor/ regulator assembly off the vehicle to confirm mechanical/electrical failure.
  8. Measure motor current during operation to detect excessive draw (binding) or no draw (open motor).
  9. Inspect and free any mechanical obstructions; check regulator guide rails and glass alignment.
  10. Check BCM/window control module communications and update/calibrate software if dealer-level updates are available.
  11. Clear codes and perform function test and any required auto-relearn or calibration procedures for the window system.
  12. Replace the defective component (switch, motor/regulator, wiring, or module) only after confirming failure with tests, then confirm repair by rechecking for codes and normal operation.

Likely causes

  • Window motor or regulator failure (most common)
  • Corroded connector or broken conductor in the door harness
  • Faulty door/window switch causing intermittent/no operation
  • Blown fuse or intermittent supply to the motor
  • CAN or LIN comms fault to the window module (less common)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Glass door window fault detected — malfunction in window operation, sensing, or communication. Investigation of motor, regulator, switches, wiring and control module recommended.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-2.5 hours
