Battery disconnection installation control

Causes

  • Battery negative or positive terminal loose or disconnected
  • Battery removed or replaced without proper procedure
  • Battery sensor (if fitted) faulty or not connected
  • Aftermarket accessory (alarm, isolator, battery cutoff) interrupting battery feed
  • Corroded terminals or poor contact at battery clamps
  • Wiring damage between battery and BCM or battery sensor

Symptoms

  • Stored B1192 fault code and MIL or message on dash about battery disconnect (may be manufacturer-specific message)
  • Loss of learned/adaptive settings (clock, radio presets, seat memory) after restart
  • Modules report recent power loss or require reprogramming/initialisation
  • Unexplained accessory or module errors that began after battery service or replacement
  • Vehicle may not crank or may have low cranking voltage if terminals are loose

What to check

  • Visually inspect battery terminals and clamps for tightness, corrosion, and correct installation
  • Check battery sensor (if present) is fitted and connector secure
  • Scan vehicle with manufacturer-capable diagnostic tool; read freeze frame and module history for time of event and related codes
  • Check fuses/relays for main power distribution and BCM supply
  • Inspect wiring from battery to BCM and to battery sensor for damage, chafing or poor connections
  • Ask vehicle owner about recent battery service, replacement or aftermarket accessories installed/removed

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage (key off, key on, cranking)
  • BCM power supply status/voltage rail
  • Battery sensor data (state of charge, sensor fault flags)
  • Time stamp of last power loss event (recorded by BCM)
  • Related module communication status (CAN bus errors)
  • Freeze frame data showing vehicle state when code set

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a Land Rover-capable scan tool and read B1192 freeze frame and module event history to confirm occurrence conditions.
  2. Visually inspect battery installation: ensure correct polarity, tight clean terminals, and that the battery is secured. Re-seat and tighten terminals; clean corrosion with appropriate methods.
  3. Check battery sensor and its connector (if fitted). Unplug/replug to confirm good contact and verify for additional sensor-related faults.
  4. Inspect main power/ground cables from battery to chassis and to the BCM for continuity and visible damage. Repair or replace damaged wiring or terminals.
  5. Verify main fuses and power relays feeding BCM; replace any blown fuses and retest.
  6. If aftermarket isolators, alarms or battery cutoff switches are present, verify correct installation and operation; disconnect temporarily to test.
  7. Recreate the condition by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery with scan tool connected to observe if the code sets and note any other modules reporting loss of power.
  8. Clear codes and perform a functional test: start and run vehicle, monitor battery voltage and BCM events. If code returns, follow module-specific diagnostic flows in the service manual for BCM replacement or reprogramming if wiring and hardware check good.
  9. If hardware and wiring are confirmed good but fault persists, consult Land Rover technical service information for BCM software updates or repair procedures and consider module programming or replacement as directed.

Likely causes

  • Loose or corroded battery terminals
  • Disconnected or damaged battery sensor harness
  • Aftermarket battery isolator or alarm removed or installed incorrectly
  • Blown main fuse supplying BCM
  • Intermittent cable or clamp connection (vibration-related)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
