Airbag Sensor Circuit Fault

Causes

  • Damaged or chafed wiring harness to the airbag/impact sensor
  • Corroded, bent or loose connector pins at sensor or module
  • Failed airbag/impact sensor
  • Poor or missing sensor ground or power supply
  • Water intrusion or contamination at connector
  • Faulty SRS control module or internal driver electronics

Symptoms

  • SRS / airbag warning lamp illuminated on dash
  • Possible related safety restraint messages (e.g., airbag disabled)
  • Diagnostic trouble code B11C1 stored in SRS module
  • Intermittent lamp behavior if connection is intermittent
  • No obvious change in vehicle driveability

What to check

  • Read SRS codes and freeze-frame with a capable scan tool; note any additional SRS or communication codes
  • Visually inspect sensor, connector, and wiring for damage, corrosion or water ingress
  • Check for recent collision repair or seat removal that could disturb wiring
  • Backprobe power and ground at sensor connector (key ON, engine OFF) following OEM safety procedures
  • Wiggle test harness while monitoring live sensor data or codes to reproduce an intermittent fault
  • Inspect and test connector pins for corrosion, push-back, or bent pins

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage: near battery voltage with ignition ON (typically ~11–14 V) to sensor power terminal (if powered sensor)
  • Ground: low resistance to chassis ground (expected
  • Signal line (analog sensors): sensor output typically within a mid-range voltage (depends on sensor; often 0.5–4.5 V) when resting
  • Digital/serial sensors: CAN/LIN messages or single-wire digital pulse — verify communication is present and within expected message rates
  • Resistance/continuity: continuity from sensor ground to chassis and continuity from sensor signal to SRS module pin (expected near 0 Ω for wiring, higher if through sensor)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a diagnostic scan tool to read DTCs and live data from the SRS module. Record related codes and freeze-frame data.
  2. Follow OEM SRS safety procedures before any physical work (consult service manual). Typically: disable SRS power (battery disconnect) and wait the specified time before unplugging connectors or removing components.
  3. Visually inspect the sensor, connector, and harness for damage, corrosion, water intrusion, or repair splices. Repair obvious harness damage.
  4. With the vehicle in a safe state per OEM guidance, backprobe sensor connector (or measure at module pin) to verify proper power and ground with ignition ON. Note voltages.
  5. Check continuity between the sensor connector and SRS control module pins for signal, power and ground. Repair any open or high-resistance circuits.
  6. Perform a wiggle/stress test on the wiring while monitoring live data or fault status to identify intermittent faults.
  7. If wiring and connectors are good but sensor signals are out of spec, replace the suspect sensor. After replacement, clear codes and perform required initialization/calibration per manufacturer instructions.
  8. If fault persists after sensor replacement and wiring verified, consider SRS control module fault or poor connector at module; consult manufacturer service procedures for module bench testing or replacement.
  9. After repairs, clear codes, re-check for stored codes, and confirm SRS lamp extinguishes and no new codes appear. Complete any required SRS system self-tests or calibrations.

Likely causes

  • Loose or corroded connector at the sensor
  • Damaged wiring harness (open or short to ground/B+)
  • Failed sensor unit
  • Poor ground at sensor or control module

Fault status

⚠️ Status
SRS: Airbag sensor circuit fault detected (B11C1). Check sensor wiring, connector, power/ground, and sensor function. SRS warning lamp is set; system may be partially disabled until repaired.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
