Causes

  • Faulty relay (sticking, welded contacts, or open coil)
  • Damaged or corroded relay socket or connector
  • Broken, shorted or high-resistance wiring between ECU/module and relay
  • Poor chassis or battery ground near relay/actuator
  • Blown or intermittent fuse supplying the relay coil or load
  • Faulty control module or driver transistor that energizes the relay

Symptoms

  • Related actuator or subsystem does not operate (e.g., pump, motor, heater flap, lock)
  • Intermittent operation of the component or stuck ON/OFF condition
  • Fuses blowing or recurrent relay audible clicking
  • Warning message or lamp on dash related to the affected system
  • Parasitic battery drain when vehicle is off (if relay stuck closed)

What to check

  • Read live data and freeze frame with manufacturer scan tool; note relay control status and related subsystem status
  • Visually inspect the relay, relay socket, and nearby harness for corrosion, melted plastic, or water ingress
  • Check related fuses for continuity and correct rating
  • With ignition on, probe relay coil supply and ground pins for battery voltage and control signal
  • Measure resistance of relay coil and compare to specification (replace relay if out of range)
  • Wiggle-test connectors and wiring while monitoring operation to reproduce intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Relay coil supply (pin B+ with ignition or commanded feed): ~12 V (vehicle battery voltage)
  • Relay coil control (ECU driver side): 0 V when active (low-side switch) or ~12 V when inactive depending on design — consult wiring diagram
  • Relay coil resistance: typically tens to a few hundred ohms (manufacturer specific)
  • Switched output (relay contact to load): battery voltage when relay closed, open circuit when relay open
  • Module communication and status flags: OK/No comm (check CAN/BUS messages)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve full fault data with a Land Rover diagnostic tool and note related subsystem and freeze-frame conditions
  2. Identify exact relay and circuit from vehicle-specific wiring diagram and component locator
  3. Perform visual inspection of relay and socket; replace relay with known-good unit and re-check fault (use only correct part number)
  4. Check fuse(s) in the supply path for continuity and correct rating; inspect for thermal damage
  5. With a multimeter, verify battery voltage at the relay supply pin with ignition on and engine off
  6. Energize the relay (carefully) and verify the switched output goes to battery voltage; verify coil control signal from the module when the subsystem is requested
  7. Measure coil resistance on the removed relay; compare to spec — if out of range, replace relay
  8. If relay and fuses are good, back-probe/control module connector to confirm module is commanding the relay and that ground reference is solid
  9. Perform wiggle/pressure tests on wiring and connectors while commanding the relay to catch intermittent faults
  10. If wiring and relay are OK but no command from module, check module power/ground and CAN communication; further module-level diagnostics may be required
  11. Clear the code and perform function test; if the code returns, continue with targeted wiring repair or module repair/replacement as indicated by test results

Likely causes

  • Failed relay or internal contact weld
  • Corroded/loose connector or socket at the relay
  • Open or short in the relay control wire between BCM/ECU and relay

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Relay circuit fault near actuator — relay failed to operate as expected (open/short/intermittent).
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
