Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring between trunk-closure button and driver display/module
  • Poor or corroded connector at the button, display, or intermediate junction
  • Damaged trunk-closure switch or internal contact failure
  • Faulty driver display, body control module (BCM) or central junction box that reads the button
  • Intermittent wiring fault (chafe, pinched harness)
  • Software/firmware communication fault or lost CAN/LIN bus message

Symptoms

  • Driver display does not show trunk-close button press
  • Trunk close function does not operate from driver display
  • Intermittent or no response when using trunk closure button
  • Related warning message or lamp in driver display
  • Other body electronics oddities if module communication affected

What to check

  • Scan vehicle and record freeze frame and related network/communication codes
  • Verify battery voltage stable (12–14 V) during tests
  • Visually inspect trunk-closure switch, wiring harness, grommets and connector(s) for damage, corrosion or moisture
  • Check for bent/broken pins at connectors for the switch and driver display/BCM
  • Attempt trunk-close operation while observing scan tool for button press data or status bits
  • Wiggle harness while observing live data to reproduce fault

Signal parameters

  • Supply feed to switch: approx. battery voltage (≈11–14 V) present with ignition/key on (verify)
  • Switch output: expected pull-to-ground or a switched +12V depending on circuit design — verify change when pressing button
  • Open-circuit: infinite/very high resistance between switch terminal and module input
  • Closed switch: continuity close to 0 Ω (a few ohms) between switch contacts when pressed
  • CAN/LIN: message/bit indicating button press should toggle in live data when pressed (if networked)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve DTC and related codes with a suitable diagnostic tool; note freeze-frame and module reporting code.
  2. Check vehicle power: verify battery and charging system voltage stable; clear codes and retest to confirm fault persistence.
  3. Visually inspect the trunk-closure switch, boot/grommet and visible harness for chafing, water ingress or damage; repair obvious faults.
  4. Locate the switch connector and backprobe the switch circuit. With ignition on, measure supply voltage and the output when pressing the button. Compare to expected values (battery voltage on feed, output should change state when pressed).
  5. Check continuity between the switch output terminal and the driver display/BCM input terminal with connector(s) disconnected. Repair any open/short.
  6. Inspect and clean connector terminals; check for corrosion and proper pin seating. Reconnect and test operation.
  7. If wiring and connectors are good, check driver display/BCM input with module grounded/unloaded per manufacturer procedure or view live data for the button status bit while pressing the switch.
  8. If no signal reaches module but switch confirms good, trace/repair wiring harness to module; if signal reaches module but module does not act, consider module fault or require reprogramming.
  9. After repairs, clear DTCs and perform functional test of trunk closure from driver display and other control points; road-test or cycle power multiple times to confirm.
  10. If intermittent or network-related, inspect related CAN/LIN wiring and other nodes; consult manufacturer service information for wiring diagrams and module test procedures.

Likely causes

  • Open or intermittent wiring at the button or harness near the door/trunk area
  • Corroded/loose connector at the driver display or switch
  • Failed trunk-closure switch
  • Connector pin damage or poor ground at module

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Trunk closure button conductor fault detected by driver display (open/short/intermittent).
