Causes

  • Low battery state of charge (discharged)
  • Aging or internally failed battery (reduced capacity or high internal resistance)
  • Poor or corroded battery terminal/cable connections
  • Faulty battery sensor (current/voltage/temperature) or wiring
  • Charging system fault (alternator, regulator, belts, charging circuit)
  • Parasitic electrical drain while parked

Symptoms

  • Battery warning light or message on instrument cluster
  • Difficult or slow engine cranking, intermittent no-start
  • Electrical accessories operate erratically or dimming/flicker
  • Stored and/or multiple related fault codes
  • Need for frequent jump starts or vehicle fails to retain charge
  • Reduced performance of start/stop or hybrid systems (if equipped)

What to check

  • Scan vehicle and read all stored and pending DTCs and freeze-frame data
  • Record battery voltage with ignition off, during cranking, and with engine running
  • Visually inspect battery for corrosion, damage, swelling, or fluid leaks
  • Check battery terminal tightness and clean corrosion; verify ground connections
  • Perform battery state-of-charge (SoC) and conductance/internal resistance test or load test
  • Verify alternator charging voltage and output current at engine idle and higher RPM

Signal parameters

  • Battery resting voltage (V) — expected ~12.6 V for fully charged lead-acid
  • Cranking voltage (V) — not below ~9–10 V under heavy load (depends on vehicle)
  • Charging voltage with engine running (V) — typical 13.5–14.8 V
  • Battery current (A) during charge and cranking
  • State of charge (SoC) % as reported by BMS
  • Battery temperature (°C) from sensor

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a calibrated diagnostic tool and read all codes and freeze-frame data; note related body, charging and CAN communication codes.
  2. With ignition off, measure and record battery terminal voltage and inspect terminals, clamps and ground connections; clean/tighten if needed.
  3. Start vehicle (if able) and measure charging voltage at the battery and at alternator output; compare against manufacturer specification (~13.5–14.8 V).
  4. Perform a battery conductance or load test to assess health; replace battery if test indicates weak/failed cells or high internal resistance.
  5. Inspect wiring and connectors for the battery sensor, main negative/positive, fusible links and CAN/BMS connectors; repair any damage or corrosion.
  6. Check for parasitic draws with vehicle sleeping; isolate circuits if draw exceeds specification.
  7. If charging output is out of range, test alternator/regulator and drive belt; repair or replace as required.
  8. If battery and charging system test good, test/replace battery sensor and verify related modules can communicate on CAN bus.
  9. Clear codes, perform relevant relearn procedures or software updates per Land Rover service information, then monitor system for recurrence and perform a short road test.
  10. If fault persists after hardware checks and replacement(s), consult manufacturer-specific diagnostics and wiring diagrams or escalate to technical support.

Likely causes

  • Battery voltage at rest significantly below 12.4 V (deep discharge or bad cell)
  • Battery age >3–5 years with reduced cranking/charging performance
  • Loose or corroded terminal clamp causing high resistance
  • Failed battery sensor (in pack or negative terminal sensor)
  • Alternator not producing expected charging voltage (below ~13.5 V or above ~14.8 V)
  • Blown / high-resistance fusible link or connector in charging circuit

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Battery/charging or battery-monitoring fault detected — check battery state, connections, charging system and battery sensor.
