Interior luggage compartment lid release switch

Causes

  • Faulty luggage compartment lid release switch
  • Open or short in switch wiring harness
  • Poor connector contact or corrosion at switch or BCM connector
  • Water ingress or contamination at switch or connector
  • Blown fuse or poor power/ground supply to switch circuit
  • Intermittent mechanical failure of the switch (sticking contacts)

Symptoms

  • Luggage compartment/tailgate release does not operate from interior switch
  • Intermittent or inconsistent operation of tailgate release
  • No response from switch but remote/key fob may still work
  • Relevant message or warning on instrument cluster
  • DTC B1219 stored in BCM fault memory

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame and related DTCs with an OEM-capable scan tool
  • Visually inspect switch and tailgate area for water, corrosion, or physical damage
  • Inspect wiring harness and connector for corrosion, bent pins, damaged insulation, or pinched wires
  • Verify related fuses and main power/ground connections are present and secure
  • Backprobe the switch connector while operating the switch and observe signal with a DVOM or scope
  • Perform a wiggle test of harness while operating switch to reproduce fault

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage to switch (if applicable): typically battery voltage ~11-14 V at the power feed pin with ignition/accessory on
  • Signal line behavior (varies by model): expected change when switch pressed — either continuity to ground (0 V or
  • Closed switch resistance: near 0 Ω to a few ohms (low resistance) when contacts closed
  • Open circuit: OL/infinite resistance when switch released (unless the circuit uses a pulled signal)
  • CAN/Central module: BCM should register a state change in the switch input when operated (check live data)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect an OEM scan tool, read BCM faults and live data, note if the switch input is reported and how it changes when operated
  2. Visually inspect switch, connector and harness for damage, corrosion and signs of water ingress; repair any visible faults
  3. Verify fuses and measure supply voltage at the switch power pin (if present) with ignition on; restore if missing
  4. Backprobe switch connector: measure signal with multimeter while pressing switch. Confirm expected active/inactive voltage or continuity to ground per vehicle wiring diagram
  5. If the signal is absent at the switch but present at the BCM connector, inspect/repair harness between switch and BCM; if absent at BCM, suspect BCM wiring or BCM input
  6. Perform continuity and short-to-ground checks on the signal wire (pin-to-pin) with connectors disconnected; repair any opens/shorts
  7. If wiring and switch check good, disconnect switch and check resistance; replace switch if contact resistance or operation is out of specification
  8. After repairs clear DTCs and retest switch operation and verify DTC does not return; if DTC persists and wiring/switch confirmed good, consider BCM diagnosis or replacement and check for software updates

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at the switch or BCM
  • Failed/missing continuity in the switch (stuck/open contacts)
  • Wiring damage (chafing, pinched, or short to ground/ignition)
  • Water ingress into switch assembly
