Causes

  • Damaged or chafed wiring contacting battery positive or fused power circuit
  • Faulty window switch with internal short to +12V
  • Corroded or damaged connector allowing battery voltage to bleed onto the signal
  • Incorrect or failed aftermarket accessory wiring
  • Faulty body/control module (less common)

Symptoms

  • Fast window descent (auto-down) not working or intermittent
  • Window may operate slowly or only with manual control
  • Fault lamp or body control warning (depending on vehicle)
  • Stored B1243 fault code in body module

What to check

  • Visual inspection of switch, connector, wiring harness (door jamb, regulator area) for damage, corrosion, melted insulation
  • Check related fuses and ignition power feed for signs of overheating
  • With ignition on, probe switch connector pins for unexpected +12V on the switch signal wire
  • Wiggle test wiring while observing voltages/behavior to reproduce fault
  • Inspect for aftermarket alarm/comfort module connections to window circuits

Signal parameters

  • Battery supply (constant or ignition-switched) ~12–14 V
  • Expected switch signal when inactive: open or pulled to ground by module (approx. 0–1 V) depending on design
  • Expected switch signal when active (fast descent): ground or low logic level (
  • Fault condition: persistent +12 V present on switch signal where 0 V/low or open is expected

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record freeze frame data and all stored codes; verify vehicle-specific notes for B1243.
  2. Perform a thorough visual inspection of the driver's/passenger's door wiring, switch, and connectors for damage, corrosion, or water ingress. Repair visible damage.
  3. With ignition ON, back-probe the window switch connector. Compare measured voltages on the switch signal pin to expected values from vehicle manual. Note if +12 V is present when it should be low/open.
  4. Disconnect the switch connector. Measure continuity between the signal wire and battery positive. If continuity exists, trace and repair short in harness toward the body or fuse box.
  5. If no short to chassis is found, bench-test or substitute the window switch. If substituting cures the fault, replace the switch.
  6. If switch replacement does not clear the fault, trace the harness to the body control module, inspecting door jamb areas and harness grommets for pinches. Repair wiring as needed.
  7. Check for and remove any aftermarket device connections to the window circuit. Repair/restore original wiring.
  8. After repairs, erase codes and perform functional test of fast window descent several times and re-scan for codes.
  9. If wiring and switch are good but fault persists, check body/control module inputs and grounds; consider module diagnosis by specialist.

Likely causes

  • Pin or terminal in switch connector contacting +12V feed (insulation worn)
  • Window switch internal failure causing internal short to positive
  • Short in harness near door hinge or window regulator where wiring flexes
  • Blown/melted insulation from prior overcurrent or poorly routed cable
  • Water ingress in door connector creating conductive path to +12V

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Fast window descent switch - short to positive detected. Signal voltage higher than expected (short to battery +12V) on the fast-down switch circuit.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-1.5 hours
