Causes

  • Physical damage to the USB port (bent pins, broken housing)
  • Corrosion or contamination (liquid ingress, debris) inside the port
  • Short to ground or short to battery on VBUS (5V) supply
  • Open or high-resistance power feed or ground to the USB port
  • Damaged or disconnected wiring/harness connector to the infotainment module
  • Faulty infotainment/USB interface module or internal connector

Symptoms

  • USB device not recognized or intermittently recognized
  • No power to USB device (device does not charge)
  • Slow or no data transfer from USB media (music, firmware updates)
  • Warning or error message on infotainment display referencing USB or port
  • Related multimedia functions inoperative or intermittent
  • Possible additional communication errors logged in the vehicle network

What to check

  • Read stored DTCs and freeze-frame data from infotainment/body control modules
  • Visually inspect the USB port for foreign objects, bent pins, corrosion or moisture
  • Test known-good USB device and cable to rule out accessory fault
  • Check related fuses and power distribution for the USB circuit
  • Inspect wiring harness and connector for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
  • Check for applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) or software updates

Signal parameters

  • VBUS (USB power) nominal ~5 V with ignition/accessory on; measure with meter
  • D+ and D- data line continuity to the USB interface module and expected idle voltages (typically around 0–3.3 V depending on implementation)
  • Resistance from VBUS to ground (no short; should be high unless a device is connected)
  • Connector pin continuity between USB port and infotainment/control module
  • CAN/CAN-FD or LIN messages between USB/infotainment module and body controllers (check for communication errors)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all related DTCs from the infotainment and body control modules; record freeze-frame and pending codes.
  2. Inspect the USB port for physical damage, debris, or signs of corrosion; remove debris and dry connector if wet.
  3. Try a known-good USB cable/device. If the code does not reappear with a known-good accessory, suspect the original device/cable.
  4. With ignition/accessory on, measure VBUS at the USB port. Expect approximately 5 V. If low/absent, check fuse and power feed to the port.
  5. Check continuity between the USB port pins and the infotainment/USB interface module connector; repair any open or high-resistance circuits.
  6. Measure resistance from VBUS to ground to detect a short. Isolate and repair any short circuits (disconnect USB device to test).
  7. Inspect harness connector at the module for corrosion, water, or damage. Re-seat connectors and check terminal condition.
  8. If wiring and port are good, perform module-level checks: verify software level, perform any recommended re-flash or reset procedures per manufacturer instructions.
  9. If module internal USB interface is suspected faulty after wiring and port checks, consider module replacement or professional repair.
  10. Clear DTCs, retest functionality with multiple devices, and road-test/operate system to confirm repair. Re-scan for return of B1252.

Likely causes

  • Water ingress/corrosion at the USB connector
  • Damaged USB port connector pins from repeated use or force
  • Loose or corroded wiring connector at the module
  • Shorted VBUS due to debris or a damaged cable/device
  • Failed USB interface in the infotainment unit

Fault status

⚠️ Status
USB Port - fault detected (power, data, short/open or contamination) reported by infotainment/body control module.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
