Causes

  • Faulty auxiliary adjustment key switch or sensor (mechanical wear or internal failure)
  • Damaged or corroded connector / wiring to the adjustment key or adjustment motor
  • Failed steering column adjustment motor or actuator
  • Blown fuse or poor power/ground to the adjustment circuit
  • Loss of CAN/bus communication between steering module and body control module
  • Module software fault or need for recalibration

Symptoms

  • Steering column does not adjust (height/reach) or is stuck in one position
  • Warning message or lamp related to steering column adjustment or memory functions
  • Audible motor noise or click without movement when attempting adjustment
  • Intermittent operation of column adjustment
  • Loss of steering memory presets related to column position

What to check

  • Read all stored DTCs and freeze-frame data with an OEM-level scanner; note related codes
  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring at the adjustment key, motor and steering column modules for damage, corrosion, or disconnection
  • Check fuses and relays feeding the adjustment circuit
  • With key/ignition on, attempt adjustment cycle and observe behavior (listen for motor, note response)
  • Check battery voltage during test; low system voltage can cause faults
  • Scan for related network communication errors (CAN/UART) to the steering/occupant modules

Signal parameters

  • Primary supply: nominal vehicle battery voltage (~11–14.5 V) present at power feed to adjustment motor/key
  • Ground continuity: near 0 Ω between component ground and chassis ground
  • Position sensor/limit-switch feedback: typically a 0–5 V sensor or discrete open/closed signals — should change when column is moved
  • Motor coil: low-ohm resistance when measured with multimeter (consult OEM spec)
  • Communications: related CAN messages present and error-free when scanned (no bus fault)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect an OEM-capable diagnostic tool. Retrieve all stored and pending DTCs and any related modules reporting faults. Record IDS/log data.
  2. Verify battery voltage is within specification. If low, charge or replace battery before further testing.
  3. Visually inspect connectors, pins, and wiring at the auxiliary adjustment key, the steering column actuator, and associated control module. Repair any corrosion, damage, or loose terminals.
  4. Check fuses/relays feeding the steering column adjustment circuit; replace if blown and retest.
  5. With the scanner, command the column adjust operation and observe scanner data values (position feedback, supply voltage, error responses). Note whether the motor receives power and if position feedback changes.
  6. If no power to motor: back-probe power and ground at the motor connector while commanding adjustment. Trace and repair any open circuit or poor ground.
  7. If power is present but no movement: inspect mechanically for binding or obstruction; remove trim as needed to access mechanism. If seized, repair or replace actuator/motor assembly.
  8. If position sensor or key is not producing expected feedback: bench-test or replace the sensor/switch. Replace the auxiliary adjustment key/switch if intermittent or out of spec.
  9. If communication errors exist: inspect CAN wiring, terminators and module connections. Repair wiring or replace module only after confirming communications fault.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform full adjustment and calibration procedure per OEM service instructions. Re-scan to confirm code does not return and verify proper operation.

Likely causes

  • Intermittent or open connector at the adjustment key
  • Failed adjustment key/sensor (most common)
  • Power supply fault (fuse, wiring) to the adjustment circuit
  • Adjustment motor seized or mechanically obstructed
