Proximity sensor of the door handle

Causes

  • Moisture or corrosion in the handle or connector
  • Damaged or worn proximity sensor in the door handle
  • Broken, chafed or shorted wiring/harness to the handle
  • Poor connector contacts or pin damage
  • Faulty door control module or internal software error
  • Contamination (dirt, grease) on the capacitive sensor surface

Symptoms

  • Hands-free or touch-to-unlock (proximity) not working for that door
  • Intermittent or false lock/unlock events when no one is near
  • Door handle LED/illumination not operating or flickering
  • Warning message or indicator about door/handle fault in the instrument cluster
  • Alarm or deadlocking not arming/disarming reliably for that door

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and all related door/body faults with a diagnostic scanner
  • Visually inspect the door-handle area, grommets and connector for water, corrosion or physical damage
  • Check for other door/handle codes and verify whether problem follows the handle or the module
  • Operate handle while watching live data: observe sensor state changes and whether values are stable
  • Back-probe connector: measure supply voltage and ground reference with ignition on
  • Wiggle test wiring while watching live data for intermittent changes

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage: typically 12 V switched or battery voltage present at sensor power pin with ignition on
  • Signal type: may be analog (0–5 V) or digital/LIN/CAN input to the door control module depending on model
  • Expected idle signal: stable low or mid-range voltage; expected change when hand is detected (rises or toggles)
  • Open-circuit: infinite resistance or no signal present when connector removed
  • Short-circuit: signal stuck at 0 V (to ground) or at constant supply rail if wiring shorted

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a compatible Land Rover diagnostic tool to read the fault, note freeze frame, and attempt to clear the code. Reproduce condition by operating the handle.
  2. Inspect the exterior handle, seals and connector for water, dirt or obvious damage. Clean and dry the area if contaminated.
  3. With connector accessible, check for corrosion, bent pins and secure mating. Back-probe to measure sensor supply, ground and signal while operating handle.
  4. Perform a wiggle test on the harness from the handle to the door ECU while observing live data for intermittent faults.
  5. If supply/ground are good but signal is abnormal, measure sensor output waveform/voltage and compare to expected behaviour (changes when hand present).
  6. If wiring or connector faults found, repair or replace wiring/connector and retest. Protect against future water ingress (seals/grommets).
  7. If wiring and connector are OK but sensor output fails, replace the door-handle proximity sensor/handle assembly per manufacturer instructions.
  8. After replacement, clear codes and perform required module programming or calibration if specified by Land Rover. Verify correct operation and re-scan for related faults.

Likely causes

  • Water ingress causing intermittent sensor behaviour or short to ground
  • Connector corrosion causing open or high resistance supply/return
  • Sensor element failure within the handle assembly
  • Damaged wiring caused by door movement or hinge area
  • Control module input fault or lost communication on vehicle network
