Rear door / luggage compartment release

Causes

  • Failed rear door or tailgate latch actuator
  • Open/short in wiring or damaged connector to the latch
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying the release circuit
  • Faulty Body Control Module (BCM) or loss of CAN communication
  • Mechanical obstruction or seized latch
  • Corrosion or water ingress in the latch or connector

Symptoms

  • Tailgate/rear door will not unlock or open using exterior or interior release
  • Remote/key fob release does not operate tailgate
  • Intermittent operation of tailgate release
  • Warning message or lamp indicating rear door fault
  • Unusual clicking or no sound from tailgate area when attempting release
  • Door shows as ajar or closed incorrectly on dash

What to check

  • Read fault codes with an OEM-capable scan tool and note any related body module faults
  • Attempt to operate the release while observing the tailgate/latch for movement or sound
  • Check battery voltage (vehicle battery >12.4 V preferred) and charging system
  • Inspect fuses and relays related to the rear door/tailgate release circuit
  • Visually inspect the tailgate harness, connector and latch area for corrosion, damage or water ingress
  • Use a DVOM to measure supply voltage and ground at the latch/actuator connector while commanding the release

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage to actuator: approx. battery voltage (11–14 V) when commanded
  • Ground continuity: near 0 ohms to chassis ground
  • Actuator coil resistance: typically low ohms (varies by design) — compare to service data
  • Current draw during operation: actuator draw in amps (stall vs running differs)
  • Command signal: switched battery or ground, or PWM depending on model; measure while commanding
  • Door-ajar sensor state on CAN/BODY module: logical states (open/closed)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all stored and pending DTCs from body and gateway modules; note freeze frame if available.
  2. Reproduce the symptom: attempt release via interior button, key fob and tailgate handle while observing behavior.
  3. Verify battery voltage and check relevant fuses/relays; replace any blown items and re-test.
  4. Using a scan tool, command the tailgate release and observe module response and any live data (actuator command, door status).
  5. Probe the actuator connector while commanding release: check supply voltage and ground. If no command voltage, trace back to BCM/relay/fuse.
  6. If command voltage is present but actuator does not move, disconnect and bench-test the actuator with direct 12 V supply (observe current draw).
  7. If actuator bench-test is OK, perform continuity/resistance checks on wiring between actuator and BCM; repair any opens/shorts/corrosion.
  8. Inspect and operate the latch mechanism manually; clean, lubricate and free any mechanical obstructions. Replace latch assembly if seized or microswitch fails.
  9. If wiring and actuator are good but module does not command, check module power/ground and CAN communication; consider module reset or software update per Tech Bulletin.
  10. After repair, clear codes and verify correct operation under all control methods; road test and re-check for return of DTC.

Likely causes

  • Latch actuator motor failed (most common)
  • Damaged connector or chafed wiring at the tailgate harness
  • Failed microswitch in latch assembly (door-ajar sensor)
  • Blown fuse protecting the release circuit
  • BCM not sending command due to internal fault or missing CAN messages

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Rear door / luggage compartment release fault detected — possible actuator, wiring, latch or body module issue. Further diagnosis recommended.
