Door Ajar Lamp Circuit Open

Causes

  • Broken or disconnected wiring between the lamp and the body control module (BCM) or instrument cluster
  • Corroded/loose connector at the lamp, harness, or module
  • Failed lamp (burned-out bulb or failed LED module)
  • Blown fuse for the interior/door lamp circuit
  • Faulty BCM/instrument cluster driver
  • Open or damaged ground connection

Symptoms

  • Door-ajar lamp (dash or interior) does not illuminate when a door is open
  • No change in door-ajar indicator status on dash when doors open/close
  • Possible illuminated warning or stored B1324 DTC
  • Other related door/dome lighting may be inoperative if on same circuit

What to check

  • Verify customer complaint and confirm B1324 is stored with a scan tool
  • Visually inspect lamp assembly, bulb/LED and connector for damage, corrosion, or disconnection
  • Check relevant fuses and fusible links for continuity
  • Operate a door to command the lamp and observe behavior (with scan tool if available)
  • Back-probe the lamp connector while commanding lamp ON to verify voltage or ground change
  • Perform continuity check between lamp connector and module connector with harness disconnected

Signal parameters

  • Normal: when commanded ON, the lamp circuit should show a driver change (either near battery voltage ~12 V or switched to ground ~0 V depending on vehicle architecture)
  • Open-circuit: infinite resistance or no voltage change when lamp is commanded
  • Continuity: low resistance
  • Current draw: incandescent lamps typically 50–300 mA; LED modules typically much lower (tens of mA)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame and related codes; record conditions. 2) Confirm the lamp does not operate by opening a door while observing the lamp. 3) Visually inspect lamp, socket, harness, and connectors for damage/corrosion and repair obvious issues. 4) Check fuse(s) for the interior/door lamp circuit; replace if blown and re-test. 5) Back-probe the lamp connector and command the lamp ON with a scan tool; note voltage or ground presence. 6) If no drive signal, measure continuity from the lamp connector to the BCM/instrument cluster pin; an open result indicates wiring/connector fault. 7) If continuity is good but lamp receives no voltage change, test the lamp itself by applying fused 12 V to the lamp connector to confirm lamp operation. 8) If lamp works when directly powered and wiring shows continuity, test module output with scope or multimeter while commanding; replace BCM/cluster only after verifying output failure. 9) Repair or replace wiring, connectors, lamp, fuse, or module as determined. 10) Clear codes and perform functional test and road test to confirm repair and no reoccurrence.

Likely causes

  • Connector unplugged or corroded at the door-ajar lamp
  • Broken wire/terminal in the harness (open conductor)
  • Failed lamp/LED module
  • Blown fuse protecting the lamp circuit
  • Defective BCM or lamp driver output
