Causes

  • Short to battery positive on the lamp feed or lamp return circuit
  • Damaged or chafed wiring harness, pin pushed out or connector shorting
  • Corroded or contaminated connector or lamp socket
  • Faulty instrument cluster / dash lamp driver (internal short)
  • Incorrect lamp or LED module fitted, internal failure
  • Blown or incorrectly rated fuse or aftermarket modification creating a backfeed

Symptoms

  • Oil change warning lamp illuminated continuously or at incorrect times
  • Lamp does not go out after service reset or when commanded off
  • Intermittent lamp operation or other instrument cluster lights acting abnormally
  • Related body electronics faults or other stored body control module codes

What to check

  • Retrieve all stored codes from relevant modules and note freeze-frame data
  • Visually inspect wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, signs of overheating near the instrument cluster and oil change lamp circuit
  • Inspect the lamp/LED socket and wiring for aftermarket splices or non‑OEM bulbs
  • Check related fuses and any in-line resistors or modules for proper rating and condition
  • Backprobe the lamp connector with key ON and command OFF to confirm presence of battery voltage (indicates short to positive)
  • Disconnect the lamp/cluster connector and see if the DTC clears or lamp behavior changes (helps isolate lamp vs harness vs module)

Signal parameters

  • Expected lamp driver output when lamp OFF: ~0 V (pull to ground) or high-impedance (depending on design)
  • Expected lamp driver output when lamp ON: ~9–14 V (depending on supply and lamp type)
  • Measured voltage indicating short-to-positive: battery voltage present (~11–14 V) on circuit when lamp is commanded OFF
  • Typical lamp/LED module resistance (cold): incandescent bulbs low ohm (few ohms); LED modules higher and include internal electronics — consult OEM specs

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record stored DTCs from instrument cluster and body control module; note freeze-frame and ignition status.
  2. Visually inspect harness, connectors, lamp socket and surrounding areas for damage, corrosion or aftermarket work.
  3. With ignition ON (engine off), backprobe the lamp connector: command lamp OFF from module if possible and measure voltage. If ~12 V is present while commanded OFF, suspect a short to positive or internal cluster failure.
  4. Disconnect the lamp/LED assembly. If the voltage/short disappears and DTC clears, test/replace the lamp assembly.
  5. If short remains with lamp removed, trace harness for continuity to battery positive. Use an ohmmeter to check for short to battery (low resistance to battery + with circuit isolated).
  6. Disconnect instrument cluster connector. If short disappears and lamp is no longer receiving +12 V, suspect cluster driver internal short; if short remains, continue tracing harness toward fuse block and battery.
  7. Inspect fuses and any intermediate switched power feeds for backfeed or incorrect wiring; disconnect any suspect aftermarket devices.
  8. Repair damaged wiring or connectors: repair or replace harness sections, clean/replace connectors, secure routing to prevent chafing.
  9. If wiring and lamp assembly are good but short persists only with cluster connected, test or replace instrument cluster per OEM procedures.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform functional tests and a road/ignition cycle to confirm the lamp behaves correctly and code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Wiring short where insulation is damaged and contacting a +12V conductor
  • Connector corrosion or pin damage at instrument cluster or lamp socket
  • Faulty lamp/LED module with internal short to +12V
  • Instrument cluster driver transistor failed short to battery

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Oil change lamp circuit: short to positive detected (battery voltage present when lamp should be off). Check lamp, harness, connectors and instrument cluster.
