Causes

  • Corroded or loose BCM power/ground connections
  • Low or unstable battery voltage or voltage spikes
  • Water ingress or physical damage to BCM
  • Software corruption, failed firmware update or memory error
  • Internal electronic component failure (solder joint, capacitor, regulator)
  • Aftermarket accessory installation or wiring modification causing interference

Symptoms

  • Multiple body systems intermittent or non-functional (doors, lights, wipers, windows, interior lighting)
  • Warning lights or BCM-related messages on dash
  • No response to remote key fob or central locking failures
  • Intermittent loss of CAN bus communication with other modules
  • Vehicle may go into limp/configuration safe state or fail to wake/sleep normally

What to check

  • Use an OEM-compatible scan tool to read B13A2, related BCM codes, freeze frame and event history
  • Check battery voltage (resting and cranking) and charging system health
  • Inspect BCM connector(s) for corrosion, bent pins, water intrusion, or damage
  • Verify fuses and relay(s) feeding the BCM
  • Measure BCM supply and reference voltages at the connector (12V, 5V or 3.3V as applicable)
  • Check ground continuity from BCM ground pins to chassis

Signal parameters

  • Primary supply: battery voltage ~12V (verify 11.5–14.5 V depending on state)
  • Internal/regulator rails: 5.0 V or 3.3 V (refer to factory data)
  • Ground continuity: near 0 ohms to chassis ground
  • CAN High/CAN Low idle voltages: ~2.5V each, differential ~2.5V with proper waveform
  • LIN or wake line voltage levels as specified by vehicle data
  • Watchdog/reset counters or self-test status flags (from module live data)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect OEM or advanced scan tool; record B13A2 plus any other DTCs, freeze frame, and module status. Do not assume this single code is only fault.
  2. Check vehicle battery state and charging system; ensure battery is fully charged and terminals are clean/tight.
  3. Visually inspect BCM and harness for moisture, corrosion, heat damage, pins pushed out, or aftermarket splices.
  4. Verify fuses/relays for BCM power circuits; measure 12V presence at BCM power pins with ignition OFF and ON.
  5. Check ground(s): measure resistance from BCM ground pins to chassis ground; repair any high-resistance ground.
  6. Monitor live data: confirm internal supply voltages, watchdog/reset counters, sleep/wake status and CAN/LIN bus activity.
  7. Use oscilloscope or bus analyzer to verify CAN frames and signal integrity; look for excessive errors or bus shorts.
  8. If power/ground and bus are good, attempt to clear codes and perform a full power-cycle (disconnect battery for a short controlled time following OEM procedures) and re-scan.
  9. Check for available Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) or software updates; reflash or update BCM software per OEM instructions if applicable.
  10. If intermittent faults persist and diagnostics indicate internal hardware failure, consider module replacement/programming. Follow manufacturer programming, immobilizer pairing and security procedures.
  11. After repair or reflash, re-scan all network modules and perform function tests to confirm system operation.

Likely causes

  • Faulty BCM power supply rail (12V, 5V or internal regulators)
  • Poor ground or connector corrosion at BCM
  • CAN/LIN bus voltage disturbances preventing normal operation
  • Stored internal watchdog or self-test error due to intermittent faults
  • Failed internal processor, EEPROM corruption or aging components

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Body Control Module internal fault detected — module self-check failed or internal communication/voltage error. Module may require repair, reprogramming, or replacement after verifying external causes.
🔴 Repair difficulty: Hard
