Causes

  • Blown fuse for presence light power supply B
  • Open or shorted wiring in power supply B circuit
  • Corroded/loose connector or poor ground at light module
  • Failed presence/ambient/puddle light module (LED unit)
  • Faulty body control module (BCM) or lighting control module output
  • Aftermarket modification or repair damaged wiring

Symptoms

  • Presence/puddle/ambient light does not illuminate or is intermittent
  • Lighting behaves inconsistently (flicker, on/off)
  • DTC B13C8 stored in BCM or lighting module
  • Possible battery drain if short to ground exists
  • Related lighting messages/errors on vehicle status display

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and full module data with a diagnostic tool; note when the fault occurred
  • Visual inspection of wiring, connectors, and lamp unit for corrosion, damage or water ingress
  • Check fuses and fusible links for the presence light circuits (supply B)
  • Probe the lamp connector with key ON to verify supply voltage and ground
  • Check for continuity and shorts to ground/power between BCM and lamp
  • Swap or inspect known-good lamp/module (if available) to isolate module vs wiring

Signal parameters

  • Expected supply voltage at lamp connector with ignition/lighting ON: ~11–14 V
  • Supply voltage when OFF: near 0 V (unless circuits are battery-fed with retained function)
  • Ground continuity:
  • Module output command: digital command/CAN request present in BCM data (check with scan tool)
  • Current draw: low for LED lamp (typically

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all related codes and relevant module data with a diagnostic scanner. Note if faults are permanent or intermittent.
  2. Perform visual inspection of lamp, connector, and wiring harness for obvious damage, corrosion or water entry. Repair any visible issues.
  3. Check the appropriate fuse(s) for presence light power supply B; replace if blown and re-test. If fuse blows again, stop and investigate short.
  4. With connector disconnected, measure supply voltage at the harness side with ignition/lighting ON. Confirm expected battery voltage (~12 V).
  5. Measure continuity from the harness power pin back to the BCM output (with power removed). Check for opens or high resistance.
  6. Check ground at the lamp: measure resistance to chassis ground and look for bad ground connections. Clean/secure ground if necessary.
  7. If wiring and fuses are good, connect a known-good lamp or bench test the suspect lamp to verify lamp functionality.
  8. Monitor BCM/lighting module outputs with a diagnostic tool while commanding the presence light ON/OFF. Verify the module is sending the correct command and that the supply responds.
  9. If BCM output is absent or supply is present but module does not operate, consider replacing the lamp/module. If BCM output is incorrect and wiring is OK, evaluate module replacement or reprogramming.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform full function test and road or ambient light cycle test to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Fuse blown or contact fault
  • Broken wire or pinched harness between BCM and lamp
  • Corroded connector at lamp or inline splice
  • LED lamp module internal failure
  • BCM driver transistor fault or internal short
