Causes

  • Blown or corroded fuse for the accessory circuit
  • Damaged or loose cigarette lighter / 12V socket
  • Wiring short to ground or open circuit in socket feed or ground
  • Poor or corroded ground connection
  • Faulty accessory (phone charger, inverter, etc.) drawing excessive current
  • Body control module (BCM) or relay output fault controlling the socket

Symptoms

  • No power at the cigar lighter / 12V socket
  • Intermittent power or sockets working only intermittently
  • Fuse repeatedly blows when an accessory is plugged in
  • Accessories won’t operate or drop in/out under load
  • Visible heat damage, melting or burning smell at socket area
  • Possible related body electrical warnings if BCM monitors the circuit

What to check

  • Visually inspect the socket for melted plastic, foreign objects, corrosion or debris
  • Check the accessory circuit fuse(s) and replace with correct rating if blown
  • Inspect wiring harness and connector for chafing, damage, corrosion or loose pins
  • Measure voltage at the socket terminal with a digital multimeter (battery referenced) with accessory unplugged and with known-good accessory connected
  • Check continuity and resistance between socket ground and chassis ground
  • Look for aftermarket devices spliced into the feed; remove to isolate fault

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage (nominal 12–14.5 V with engine running)
  • Socket output voltage (should be near battery voltage with no load)
  • Fuse feed voltage (voltage upstream and downstream of fuse)
  • Resistance/continuity between socket ground and chassis (should be very low,
  • Load current drawn by accessory (compare to fuse rating)
  • Voltage drop across connector/wire under load (should be minimal, typically

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety: follow workshop procedures; remove high-current accessories and wear eye protection when working on electrical systems.
  2. Step 1 — Verify symptom: attempt to operate a known-good accessory in the socket; note intermittent behaviour or fuse blow.
  3. Step 2 — Check fuse: inspect and test the accessory circuit fuse(s); replace blown fuse with correct rating. If fuse blows again, do not repeatedly replace without isolating circuit.
  4. Step 3 — Inspect socket: visually and physically inspect socket for foreign objects, melted plastic, carbonization or loose contacts; clean or replace socket if contaminated or damaged.
  5. Step 4 — Measure voltages: with a DMM measure battery voltage and voltage at the socket feed pin and socket body/ground. No feed voltage points toward upstream fuse/relay/BCM; no ground points to ground connection issue.
  6. Step 5 — Load/current test: measure current draw when a known-good accessory is connected. Excessive current indicates a short or faulty accessory/shorted wiring.
  7. Step 6 — Wiring check: inspect wiring from socket to fuse/relay/BCM for chafing, pinched sections or corrosion. Perform continuity and resistance checks; repair any damaged wiring or connectors.
  8. Step 7 — Isolate accessory/aftermarket parts: disconnect any aftermarket devices or accessories from the circuit and retest.
  9. Step 8 — BCM/relay check: if wiring and socket are good and fuse still blows or there is no control/feedback from BCM, consult wiring diagrams and test relay/BCM outputs. Replace or reprogram BCM only after confirming wiring and component faults.
  10. Step 9 — Confirm repair: after repair or replacement, verify socket operation under load and ensure fuse does not blow. Clear any related fault codes and confirm they do not return.

Likely causes

  • Blown fuse protecting the cigar lighter circuit
  • Damaged or contaminated socket contacts preventing power transfer
  • Wiring short or open between fuse/relay/BCM and socket
  • Loose or corroded ground at the socket or chassis

Fault status

⚠️ Status
