Causes

  • Burnt or failed reverse bulb (left)
  • Blown fuse or fusible link for rear lighting circuit
  • Poor or corroded connector at the lamp or harness
  • Open or damaged wiring (broken conductor or pinched harness)
  • Short to ground or short to battery in the lamp circuit
  • Bad ground/earth at lamp housing or chassis return

Symptoms

  • Left reverse light does not illuminate when reverse gear selected
  • Intermittent or flickering left reverse lamp
  • Only right reverse light works
  • Related dash warning or lamp fault message
  • Associated DTCs for other rear lamps or BCM lighting outputs

What to check

  • Visual inspection of left rear lamp: bulb condition, socket, lens and housing for water/corrosion
  • Check relevant fuses and fusible links for continuity
  • Scan vehicle and read BCM/body module for stored codes and live data
  • Swap left bulb with right to confirm whether bulb is the issue
  • Inspect wiring and connector for damage, corrosion, bent pins or poor seating
  • Measure voltage at lamp socket with ignition on and transmission in reverse

Signal parameters

  • Expected supply voltage at lamp feed when reverse engaged: ~11–14 V (vehicle battery voltage)
  • Expected near 0 V on feed when reverse not selected (depending on circuit design)
  • Bulb filament resistance: low ohms (varies by bulb type; normally a few ohms for a typical rear lamp filament)
  • Continuity between lamp ground terminal and chassis ground: low resistance (near 0 Ω)
  • No excessive current draw when correct bulb fitted (large draw indicates short or incorrect lamp)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify symptom: confirm left reverse lamp inoperative with transmission in reverse and engine/ignition state as required.
  2. Check fuses: inspect and test the fuse(s) for rear/reverse lamp circuit; replace if blown and retest.
  3. Inspect bulb and socket: remove left bulb, inspect filament and contacts, check for corrosion or water ingress; swap bulb with right side to test.
  4. Measure voltage: with helper selecting reverse, back-probe the lamp feed pin at the socket and measure voltage to ground. If ~12 V present, suspect bulb/socket/ground. If no voltage, continue to wiring/BCM checks.
  5. Check ground: measure continuity between lamp ground terminal and chassis; repair any high-resistance ground.
  6. Inspect wiring: visually follow harness for chafing, connector damage or corrosion; repair or replace damaged sections. Use continuity test between lamp socket and BCM/fuse.
  7. Check for short: if fuse blows when reverse selected, isolate sections to locate short to ground; use an ammeter or fused jumper for safe testing.
  8. Module check: using a diagnostic scanner, monitor BCM output for left reverse lamp while commanding reverse lamp on; if BCM reports output but no voltage at socket, suspect wiring; if BCM shows low/no output and wiring is good, consider BCM/driver fault or software update.
  9. Repair and verify: replace defective bulb, repair wiring/connectors or replace socket as required, clear codes, retest multiple cycles and road-test to confirm fix.
  10. If BCM suspected after wiring proven good, follow manufacturer procedure for BCM replacement/configuration and confirm with diagnostic tool.

Likely causes

  • Failed bulb or poor bulb contact
  • Connector corrosion or loose terminal at left rear lamp
  • Open circuit in the left reverse lamp feed or ground
  • Blown fuse protecting the rear lamp circuit
  • Intermittent wiring fault where harness flexes
  • BCM output driver fault (less common)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Left reverse lamp circuit fault detected — abnormal condition (open/short/low output/intermittent) on left reverse light feed reported by control module.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-1.5 hours
