Causes

  • Open or short in sensor wiring or connector
  • Corroded or loose connector pins
  • Faulty left rear face temperature sensor (thermistor)
  • Water ingress or physical damage to sensor or harness
  • Poor ground or loss of reference supply to the HVAC sensor circuit
  • HVAC/climate control module (ACU) internal fault or software/calibration error

Symptoms

  • Left rear zone temperature incorrect or not matching setpoint
  • HVAC zone uses default or fallback value for left rear zone
  • System warning/message related to interior temperature sensor
  • Uneven cabin temperature or poor climate control performance in left rear
  • Related DTC present after HVAC operation or vehicle start

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and full fault code data using a compatible scan tool
  • Visual inspection of sensor, harness and connector for damage, contamination or water
  • Check for related HVAC/climate codes and module status
  • Measure reference supply voltage and ground at the sensor connector with key on (compare to spec)
  • Measure sensor resistance/voltage and compare to expected values at known ambient temperature
  • Wiggle test harness while monitoring live sensor value to reveal intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Sensor type: typically an NTC thermistor (negative temperature coefficient)
  • Typical resistance: roughly 10 kΩ at ~25 °C (manufacturer values vary) — resistance decreases as temperature rises
  • Typical signal voltage to module: commonly in the 0.5–4.5 V range depending on pull-up/pull-down circuit
  • Supply/reference: often ~5 V from HVAC module; ground common to vehicle chassis
  • Operating temperature range: usually -40 °C to +85 °C (verify vehicle spec)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scan tool, read/record B13DE and any related codes; note freeze frame data and live sensor values.
  2. Clear the code, operate HVAC/drive cycle to attempt code reappearance while monitoring live data for the left rear face temperature sensor.
  3. Perform a careful visual inspection at the left rear sensor location and along the harness for chafing, deformation, water entry or disconnected connectors.
  4. With ignition on (engine off), probe the sensor connector: verify reference voltage (approx. 5 V) and good ground. If reference or ground missing, trace back to module and repair as required.
  5. Measure the sensor resistance at ambient temperature (disconnect sensor). Compare measured resistance to expected values for that temperature. Heat the sensor slightly (warm finger or heat gun at low setting) to confirm resistance decreases with increasing temperature (NTC behaviour).
  6. If resistance/voltage is out of specification or does not change with temperature, replace the sensor and retest.
  7. If sensor tests good, perform continuity/resistance checks on wiring between sensor connector and HVAC module; repair any opens/shorts or corrosion.
  8. If wiring and sensor are good but the fault persists, check the HVAC/climate module inputs and grounds, update module software if available, and consider module repair/replacement as a last resort.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and validate system operation under several temperature/drive conditions to ensure the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Connector corrosion at the sensor or module
  • Broken/chafed conductor in the harness to left rear sensor
  • Failed thermistor element (out-of-spec resistance)
  • Intermittent connection caused by movement/wear in harness

Fault status

⚠️ Status
