Front right electric window motor short to ground

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Damaged or chafed wiring harness to front right window motor (insulation worn, exposed conductor touching chassis)
  • Corroded or pushed-back connector pins at the motor or door junction
  • Failed window motor with internal short to chassis
  • Faulty window switch or connector causing a permanent ground on the circuit
  • Faulty body control/window control module output stage shorted to ground
  • Aftermarket equipment or poor previous repair that created a ground on the circuit

Symptoms

  • Front right window does not move or moves intermittently
  • Blown fuse related to power windows (repeatedly)
  • Other window functions working while front right fails (isolated fault)
  • Burn smell at door or connector in severe cases
  • Illumination of body/window related warning or stored codes

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and any stored DTCs with a diagnostic scanner
  • Visually inspect wiring harness in door, door jamb boot and connectors for damage, pin corrosion, melted insulation or signs of arcing
  • Check fuses and relays for power window circuits
  • With ignition ON, back-probe motor connector and switch connector to check for unexpected continuity to ground
  • Disconnect motor and check for short to ground on the motor power feeds using an ohmmeter (connector disconnected)
  • Inspect window switch operation and connector continuity

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage at motor supply when switch commanded: ~11–14 V (engine off)
  • Voltage on the return/drive line should be near 0 V when driven to ground and near battery voltage when driven to the opposite polarity (depending on driver topology)
  • Motor winding resistance: low (typically a few ohms; exact value varies by motor) — measure with motor disconnected
  • Standby: control module output should be high impedance (no direct short to ground)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm code and any related DTCs with a capable scan tool; note freeze-frame data.
  2. Visually inspect external wiring, door boot, connectors and motor for damage, corrosion, or signs of heat/arcing.
  3. Remove interior door panel to access motor and connector; secure window so it cannot fall if motor is disconnected.
  4. With connector disconnected, measure resistance between each motor power pin and chassis ground — a near-zero reading indicates an internal motor short.
  5. Back-probe motor connector while operating the switch: verify battery voltage is present on the supply lead when commanded and that the return lead changes state; if a circuit is permanently at ground, that indicates a short.
  6. If motor is suspected, bench-test motor with a fused 12V supply (observe polarity for direction) and measure current draw — excessive current or no movement indicates motor/regulator failure. Use an inline fuse or current-limited supply for safety.
  7. If motor checks OK, inspect switch continuity and wiring between switch and control module; wiggle test harness through full door travel to reproduce fault.
  8. Use the scan tool to command the window and monitor module outputs; if module output remains low despite commands and wiring checked, suspect module driver failure.
  9. Repair/replace damaged wiring, connectors or motor as required. Clear codes and retest function and code memory.
  10. After repair, perform final verification: multiple operations, verify no reoccurrence of B1421 and no excessive current draw.

Likely causes

  • Wiring chafe at door hinge/boot between body and door
  • Connector corrosion/moisture on motor connector
  • Motor internal short due to water ingress or mechanical failure
  • Shorted driver transistor in the body/window control module
