Causes

  • Corrupt or unreadable BCM configuration EEPROM data
  • Interrupted or failed software update/programming
  • Low or unstable battery voltage during programming or operation
  • Internal BCM component failure (EEPROM or controller)
  • Water ingress, corrosion or physical damage to BCM or connectors
  • Poor power/ground connections or wiring faults

Symptoms

  • Body electrical functions intermittent or inoperative (locks, lights, wipers, interior functions)
  • Fault warnings on dash or multiple related DTCs present (module comms/corruption)
  • Remote/keyless entry, immobiliser or alarm faults
  • Modules on vehicle network not responding or reporting comms faults
  • Stored related U‑codes for CAN communication loss
  • Vehicle may fail certain programmable features or personalization settings

What to check

  • Read all stored DTCs from BCM and other modules; record freeze frame and related U‑codes
  • Check battery state of charge and charging system; verify stable supply voltage (12.6V+ at rest; >11V during crank and programming)
  • Inspect BCM connector(s) for corrosion, bent pins, water damage or loose terminals
  • Check power and ground circuits to BCM for voltage drop and continuity
  • Verify CAN/LIN bus integrity: wiring, termination resistors and continuity; note other modules reporting communications errors
  • Check service history for recent software updates, module replacements or aftermarket installations

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage (vehicle off and while key on)
  • Ignition input state to BCM (IGN_ON/ACC)
  • BCM internal status flags: EEPROM checksum/CRC, configuration valid/invalid (if readable via manufacturer tool)
  • CAN bus messages from BCM present/absent and message frequency (tx/rx counts)
  • Module programming status and last reflash timestamp (via dealer tool)
  • Ground resistance to chassis at BCM return point

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record all codes from all modules with a capable scan tool; save logs/ freeze frame. 2) Verify battery voltage and health; charge or connect a diagnostic support battery to ensure >12.4V during tests. 3) Visually inspect BCM and connectors for water, corrosion or damage; repair any wiring faults or corroded terminals. 4) Check power and ground feeds to BCM with multimeter for proper voltages and low resistance. 5) Verify network communication: confirm CAN/LIN messages from BCM and absence of bus errors; repair wiring as needed. 6) Search OEM service information/TSBs for known BCM EEPROM faults and recommended reprogramming procedure. 7) If no wiring or power faults, attempt a soft reset and clear codes; if code returns, perform manufacturer-specified BCM reflash / EEPROM reprogram using dealer-level tool and correct vehicle configuration/ VIN coding. 8) After reflash, clear codes and verify all functions; monitor for recurrence. 9) If reprogramming fails or EEPROM reports hardware failure, replace BCM with a new/reconditioned unit and perform required coding/immobiliser pairing and reprogramming. 10) Retest vehicle functions and road test, then confirm no related codes return.

Likely causes

  • Failed or degraded EEPROM inside BCM
  • Incomplete or failed BCM reflash/programming event
  • Battery voltage below recommended level during module programming
  • Faulty BCM connector/terminal corrosion or intermittent power/ground
  • Network wiring fault causing configuration checksum errors
  • Previous module replacement where coding/ VIN/ configuration was not applied

Fault status

⚠️ Status
