Causes

  • Broken or disconnected wiring in the driver airbag squib 2 circuit
  • Faulty clock spring (spiral cable) in the steering column
  • Poor or corroded connector at the airbag module, steering wheel or intermediate connector
  • Detached or damaged squib (airbag inflator) connector
  • Faulty airbag (squib) assembly
  • Faulty airbag control module or internal connector fault

Symptoms

  • SRS / Airbag warning lamp illuminated on instrument cluster
  • Possible diagnostic trouble codes logged in the airbag control module
  • Driver airbag disabled (module may show specific readiness/fault)
  • Steering wheel buttons or horn may also be affected if clock spring is damaged

What to check

  • Confirm fault stored using appropriate SRS diagnostic tool and read freeze frame or history
  • Visually inspect steering wheel area, clock spring and connectors for damage or corrosion
  • Check connectors at the airbag control module for bent pins, corrosion or loose fit
  • Verify manufacturer's recommended post‑crash procedures if vehicle involved in accident
  • Ensure battery state of charge is adequate before diagnostics

Signal parameters

  • Expected squib resistance (typical): ~2–5 Ω (varies by vehicle/manufacturer)
  • Open-circuit condition: infinite resistance / OL on ohmmeter
  • Connector pin voltages: no normal high DC voltage should be present across the squib unless performing manufacturer-controlled firing test — do not attempt firing
  • With connectors disconnected, continuity between airbag module pin and steering wheel squib pin should be low resistance (≈2–5 Ω) if circuit intact

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. SAFETY FIRST: Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait the manufacturer‑specified time (usually 90 seconds or as specified in service manual) before any work on SRS components. Use anti‑static precautions and follow SRS service procedures.
  2. Scan SRS airbag control module with an appropriate diagnostic tool; record freeze frame and all related codes.
  3. Perform a visual inspection of steering wheel, clock spring, and wiring harness for damage, pinched wires, or corrosion. Check steering column covers for previous repairs.
  4. With battery isolated and following service manual, unplug connectors at the airbag control module and the steering wheel (clock spring). Inspect pins and sockets; repair or replace corroded/damaged connectors.
  5. Measure continuity/resistance of the driver squib circuit between the airbag module connector pin and the steering wheel squib pin. Normal: low resistance (~2–5 Ω). An open (OL/infinite) confirms an open circuit in wiring/connector or a disconnected squib.
  6. If open between module and steering wheel connector, trace wiring back and repair open splice, broken conductor or damaged harness. If continuity is present to the steering wheel connector but not through the clock spring, replace the clock spring.
  7. If wiring and clock spring measure correctly, measure resistance of the squib at the airbag connector at the steering wheel (with squib connector removed per manual). If squib resistance is open or out of specification, replace the driver airbag assembly.
  8. After repairs, clear codes using diagnostic tool and perform SRS system self‑test. Verify no reoccurring faults and that the SRS warning lamp behaves normally.
  9. If fault persists and wiring and squib test good, consider internal fault in airbag control module — send for repair/replace per manufacturer guidance.

Likely causes

  • Damaged wiring or connector at the steering wheel/clock spring
  • Faulty clock spring (most common on steering‑wheel related open circuits)
  • Corroded/loose connector at airbag module or steering wheel
  • Defective driver airbag squib

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Open-circuit fault detected on Driver Airbag Squib 2 circuit. Airbag control module has logged a fault and SRS/Airbag warning lamp will be illuminated. Driver inflator circuit may be disabled until repaired.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5 - 2.0 hours
