Intermittent wiper relay short to ground
Causes
- Damaged or chafed wiring making intermittent contact with chassis ground
- Corroded or bent relay/socket terminals
- Water ingress or corrosion in relay housing or connector
- Faulty intermittent-wiper relay (internal short)
- Poor or intermittent ground at relay connector or body ground point
- Faulty Body Control Module (BCM) / wiper control driver (less common)
Symptoms
- Intermittent or erratic wiper intermittent/interval function
- Wipers may fail to operate on intermittent mode or operate continuously
- Relay may click intermittently or at the wrong times
- Possibly a blown fuse if short is heavy
- DTC B1432 stored and/or dashboard warning related to wiper system
What to check
- Read and record freeze-frame / scan-tool data and all stored codes; note conditions when code set
- Visual inspection of wiper relay, relay socket and harness for damage, corrosion, moisture
- Check fuses related to wiper circuits for continuity
- Wiggle test harness and relay while monitoring for code recreation or wiper behavior
- Measure voltage at relay supply and control terminals with connector connected while operating wiper switch
- Measure resistance between relay coil terminals and chassis ground with relay removed to check for short
Signal parameters
- Relay supply terminal: should be near battery voltage (approx. 12 V) with ignition ON
- Relay control/driver terminal: will be switched by BCM — may be pulled to ground or supplied with 12 V depending on design; expected to toggle between ground and open/12 V when commanded
- Relay coil continuity: typical relay coil shows low to moderate ohms (tens to low hundreds of ohms); a near-zero resistance to chassis ground indicates a short
- Ground resistance: continuity to chassis ground should be near 0 Ω (
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a scan tool, read the code(s) and note operating conditions (ignition on, switch position) when B1432 was stored.
- Perform a visual inspection of relay, socket and nearby wiring for chafing, insulation damage, corrosion, or moisture. Repair obvious damage.
- With ignition OFF, remove the intermittent-wiper relay. Inspect relay pins and socket for corrosion, bent pins or overheating. Clean or replace as needed.
- With relay removed, check resistance between relay coil terminals and chassis ground. A near-zero resistance indicates a short to ground. Record readings.
- Check relay coil continuity across coil terminals. Expect a finite resistance (tens to low hundreds of ohms). Open or drastically low/zero readings indicate a faulty relay.
- Reinstall a known-good relay (swap with identical relay in vehicle if available) and clear codes. Reproduce the fault by operating intermittent wiper function while monitoring for code return.
- If code returns with good relay, back-probe the control and supply terminals at the relay socket with ignition ON while operating the wiper switch. Verify proper switching behavior and voltages per vehicle wiring diagram.
- If a control terminal shows continuous ground when it should not, trace harness toward BCM for shorts to chassis or pinched sections. Isolate sections by disconnecting connectors and rechecking until the short location is narrowed.
- Repair damaged wiring, replace corroded connectors or grounds, apply dielectric grease and secure harness away from sharp edges. Replace relay if internally shorted.
- After repairs, clear codes and road-test to confirm normal intermittent wiper operation and that B1432 does not return.
- Safety note: When probing and testing live circuits, use appropriate fused test leads and take care to avoid creating new shorts. Disconnect the battery before performing connector repairs or soldering.

Causes
- Damaged or chafed wiring making intermittent contact with chassis ground
- Corroded or bent relay/socket terminals
- Water ingress or corrosion in relay housing or connector
- Faulty intermittent-wiper relay (internal short)
- Poor or intermittent ground at relay connector or body ground point
- Faulty Body Control Module (BCM) / wiper control driver (less common)
Symptoms
- Intermittent or erratic wiper intermittent/interval function
- Wipers may fail to operate on intermittent mode or operate continuously
- Relay may click intermittently or at the wrong times
- Possibly a blown fuse if short is heavy
- DTC B1432 stored and/or dashboard warning related to wiper system
What to check
- Read and record freeze-frame / scan-tool data and all stored codes; note conditions when code set
- Visual inspection of wiper relay, relay socket and harness for damage, corrosion, moisture
- Check fuses related to wiper circuits for continuity
- Wiggle test harness and relay while monitoring for code recreation or wiper behavior
- Measure voltage at relay supply and control terminals with connector connected while operating wiper switch
- Measure resistance between relay coil terminals and chassis ground with relay removed to check for short
Signal parameters
- Relay supply terminal: should be near battery voltage (approx. 12 V) with ignition ON
- Relay control/driver terminal: will be switched by BCM — may be pulled to ground or supplied with 12 V depending on design; expected to toggle between ground and open/12 V when commanded
- Relay coil continuity: typical relay coil shows low to moderate ohms (tens to low hundreds of ohms); a near-zero resistance to chassis ground indicates a short
- Ground resistance: continuity to chassis ground should be near 0 Ω (
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a scan tool, read the code(s) and note operating conditions (ignition on, switch position) when B1432 was stored.
- Perform a visual inspection of relay, socket and nearby wiring for chafing, insulation damage, corrosion, or moisture. Repair obvious damage.
- With ignition OFF, remove the intermittent-wiper relay. Inspect relay pins and socket for corrosion, bent pins or overheating. Clean or replace as needed.
- With relay removed, check resistance between relay coil terminals and chassis ground. A near-zero resistance indicates a short to ground. Record readings.
- Check relay coil continuity across coil terminals. Expect a finite resistance (tens to low hundreds of ohms). Open or drastically low/zero readings indicate a faulty relay.
- Reinstall a known-good relay (swap with identical relay in vehicle if available) and clear codes. Reproduce the fault by operating intermittent wiper function while monitoring for code return.
- If code returns with good relay, back-probe the control and supply terminals at the relay socket with ignition ON while operating the wiper switch. Verify proper switching behavior and voltages per vehicle wiring diagram.
- If a control terminal shows continuous ground when it should not, trace harness toward BCM for shorts to chassis or pinched sections. Isolate sections by disconnecting connectors and rechecking until the short location is narrowed.
- Repair damaged wiring, replace corroded connectors or grounds, apply dielectric grease and secure harness away from sharp edges. Replace relay if internally shorted.
- After repairs, clear codes and road-test to confirm normal intermittent wiper operation and that B1432 does not return.
- Safety note: When probing and testing live circuits, use appropriate fused test leads and take care to avoid creating new shorts. Disconnect the battery before performing connector repairs or soldering.
Likely causes
- Relay coil internally shorted to relay case or ground
- Pinched harness at firewall or near wiper motor where wiring rubs and insulation worn
- Connector terminal corrosion creating intermittent low-resistance path to ground
- Aftermarket accessory or repair introduced a stray ground
- Loose or corroded ground strap at nearby chassis/body ground

- Faulty Body Control Module (BCM) / wiper control driver (less common)
Symptoms
- Intermittent or erratic wiper intermittent/interval function
- Wipers may fail to operate on intermittent mode or operate continuously
- Relay may click intermittently or at the wrong times
- Possibly a blown fuse if short is heavy
- DTC B1432 stored and/or dashboard warning related to wiper system
What to check
- Read and record freeze-frame / scan-tool data and all stored codes; note conditions when code set
- Visual inspection of wiper relay, relay socket and harness for damage, corrosion, moisture
- Check fuses related to wiper circuits for continuity
- Wiggle test harness and relay while monitoring for code recreation or wiper behavior
- Measure voltage at relay supply and control terminals with connector connected while operating wiper switch
- Measure resistance between relay coil terminals and chassis ground with relay removed to check for short
Signal parameters
- Relay supply terminal: should be near battery voltage (approx. 12 V) with ignition ON
- Relay control/driver terminal: will be switched by BCM — may be pulled to ground or supplied with 12 V depending on design; expected to toggle between ground and open/12 V when commanded
- Relay coil continuity: typical relay coil shows low to moderate ohms (tens to low hundreds of ohms); a near-zero resistance to chassis ground indicates a short
- Ground resistance: continuity to chassis ground should be near 0 Ω (
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a scan tool, read the code(s) and note operating conditions (ignition on, switch position) when B1432 was stored.
- Perform a visual inspection of relay, socket and nearby wiring for chafing, insulation damage, corrosion, or moisture. Repair obvious damage.
- With ignition OFF, remove the intermittent-wiper relay. Inspect relay pins and socket for corrosion, bent pins or overheating. Clean or replace as needed.
- With relay removed, check resistance between relay coil terminals and chassis ground. A near-zero resistance indicates a short to ground. Record readings.
- Check relay coil continuity across coil terminals. Expect a finite resistance (tens to low hundreds of ohms). Open or drastically low/zero readings indicate a faulty relay.
- Reinstall a known-good relay (swap with identical relay in vehicle if available) and clear codes. Reproduce the fault by operating intermittent wiper function while monitoring for code return.
- If code returns with good relay, back-probe the control and supply terminals at the relay socket with ignition ON while operating the wiper switch. Verify proper switching behavior and voltages per vehicle wiring diagram.
- If a control terminal shows continuous ground when it should not, trace harness toward BCM for shorts to chassis or pinched sections. Isolate sections by disconnecting connectors and rechecking until the short location is narrowed.
- Repair damaged wiring, replace corroded connectors or grounds, apply dielectric grease and secure harness away from sharp edges. Replace relay if internally shorted.
- After repairs, clear codes and road-test to confirm normal intermittent wiper operation and that B1432 does not return.
- Safety note: When probing and testing live circuits, use appropriate fused test leads and take care to avoid creating new shorts. Disconnect the battery before performing connector repairs or soldering.
