Causes

  • Short to ground in the right headlamp range motor power or signal circuit
  • Damaged/chafed wiring harness or pinched cable near right headlamp
  • Corroded or damaged connector at the right headlamp motor
  • Failed headlamp range adjustment motor (internal short)
  • Faulty headlamp control module or body control module output transistor
  • Water intrusion into headlamp assembly causing electrical fault

Symptoms

  • Warning message or lamp related to headlamp leveling or lighting on instrument cluster
  • Right headlamp leveling/aim not adjusting or stuck in one position
  • Uneven headlamp aim between left and right
  • Stored fault code B1481 when scanning control units
  • Intermittent or permanent headlamp leveling failure for the right lamp

What to check

  • Scan vehicle and read freeze frame/related stored codes and live data
  • Visual inspection of right headlamp connector, motor, and wiring for damage, corrosion, or water
  • Check fuses and relays for the headlamp/leveling circuit
  • Disconnect right headlamp motor connector and check if code clears or changes
  • Measure voltage at the motor connector with ignition ON (expected ~11–14 V on supply line when commanded)
  • Measure resistance between motor power/signal pins and chassis ground to look for a short

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage to motor: nominal ~11–14 V when circuit is intact
  • Voltage at motor output when shorted to ground: near 0 V
  • Motor circuit resistance to ground: very low (approaching 0 Ω) indicates short
  • Motor operating current: higher than normal if internal short or mechanical bind (vehicle-specific)
  • Control module fault flag for short to ground on right headlamp motor output

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve DTCs and live data from relevant control modules. Note any related faults and freeze-frame data.
  2. Perform visual inspection of right headlamp assembly, connector, and wiring for physical damage, corrosion, or water ingress.
  3. With ignition OFF, disconnect the right headlamp range motor connector. Check resistance between the motor power/signal pins and chassis ground. A very low resistance indicates a short in the motor or wiring on the vehicle side.
  4. With ignition ON, measure voltage at the motor connector (module connected) to confirm whether the module output is being pulled to ground. If voltage is near 0 V with connector connected, there is a short or module output fault.
  5. If the motor is disconnected and the control module still shows a short, isolate the wiring between the module and the lamp: unplug intermediate connectors and measure continuity/resistance to ground to locate the short.
  6. If wiring appears OK, bench-test the motor by applying appropriate 12 V supply briefly and measure current draw. Excessive current or no movement indicates motor failure—replace motor/assembly as required.
  7. If motor benches good and wiring is intact, suspect control module output stage. Verify module outputs and wiring per manufacturer procedures; replace module only after confirming wiring and load are good.
  8. Repair or replace damaged wiring, connectors, or motor as found. Clear codes and perform function test and aiming procedure. Re-scan to confirm no recurrence.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/damaged connector or wiring at the right headlamp (most common)
  • Motor internal short (motor draws excessive current to ground)
  • Harness chafe where it contacts body or frame leading to short
  • Control module output stage failed short to ground

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Right headlamp range adjustment motor (E2m1) circuit short to ground detected — control module has stored fault and may have disabled motor output.
