Causes

  • Open or short in the door-handle wiring harness
  • Corroded, bent, or loose connector pins at the handle or module
  • Failed door-handle switch, sensor, or integrated module
  • Water intrusion or corrosion inside the door or handle assembly
  • Blown fuse or poor ground for the circuit
  • Faulty body control module (BCM) or door module

Symptoms

  • Exterior right front door handle does not lock/unlock or respond
  • DTC B1487 stored and may illuminate a warning or cause related convenience features to fail
  • Intermittent operation of the right front door unlock/lock or touch-sense
  • Possible inability to open the right front door from the outside
  • Related door-locked/unlocked status incorrect on cluster or infotainment

What to check

  • Read and record all DTCs and freeze frame data with a scan tool; note any related body/door codes
  • Perform a visual inspection of the right front door harness, connectors, and handle assembly for damage or corrosion
  • Check fuses and grounds related to the door/BCM circuits
  • Wiggle-test the door harness while operating the handle to reproduce the fault
  • Backprobe the handle connector and BCM connector while activating the handle to observe signal behavior
  • Inspect inside the door for water corrosion, rust, or detached wiring near window regulators and hinges

Signal parameters

  • Power supply: battery voltage (approx. 12 V) present at the handle power feed when supplied
  • Signal type: normally a digital switch or low-voltage sensor (typical reference/signal ~0–5 V) or a low-current contact to ground
  • Switch closed: near 0 Ω or
  • Switch open: open-circuit or high resistance (kΩ to MΩ range) and no switching voltage change
  • Communication-based handle: LIN or CAN messages present on bus (if vehicle uses local door module)
  • Current: very low (mA range) for sensor circuits; short to battery will show high current draw

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scan tool, read and record B1487 and any related codes (BCM, door modules). Check freeze-frame and live data while operating handle.
  2. Visual inspection: open right front door, inspect wiring grommet at A-pillar, connectors at the door and handle, look for rubbed-through insulation, corrosion, or water accumulation.
  3. Check fuses and ground(s) for the door/BCM circuits; clean and tighten grounds if needed.
  4. With ignition ON, backprobe the handle connector and observe voltage or signal while pressing or touching the handle. Verify expected reference voltage and switching to ground or expected signal change.
  5. Perform continuity/resistance checks between the handle connector and the BCM/door module connector with connectors disconnected. Repair any open or high-resistance sections.
  6. Wiggle the harness and operate the handle to try to reproduce the fault; if intermittent appears, repair chafe points or replace harness section.
  7. If the handle uses CAN/LIN, verify bus communication at the door module and check for errors; replace module only after wiring and connectors are verified good.
  8. If wiring and connectors are good but the handle does not operate, bench-test or replace the handle assembly or door-module sensor and retest.
  9. Clear codes, perform operation tests and a test drive where applicable. Re-scan to confirm code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Broken or chafed wire in the harness between the right front door and BCM
  • Corroded connector at the door harness or handle assembly
  • Failed mechanical switch or touch-sensor inside the right front handle
  • Poor ground at the door or pinched ground strap
  • Moisture ingress causing intermittent short to ground

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored DTC B1487 — Door Handle Right Front Circuit Failure. The body/door control detected an open, short, or communication fault in the right front exterior handle circuit. This may disable outside-handle unlocking/entry for the affected door.
