Causes

  • Internal BCM EEPROM corruption or failure
  • Incomplete or failed software update/reflash
  • Battery voltage drop or disconnection during EEPROM write
  • Poor power/ground connections to the BCM
  • Water ingress, physical damage, or manufacturing defect
  • Intermittent CAN/bus communications or bus faults causing corrupted data

Symptoms

  • Stored B14C5 (BCM EEPROM) DTC and possibly other related DTCs
  • BCM-controlled systems intermittent or inoperative (lights, locks, wipers, windows, alarms, body lighting)
  • Module does not respond or intermittently responds to scan tool
  • Configuration options lost (e.g., learned keys, comfort settings)
  • Vehicle may show multiple unrelated faults due to invalid data

What to check

  • Read all stored codes and freeze frame with a dealer-level or capable scan tool; note related network faults
  • Verify battery/resting voltage and charging system voltage at the time of inspection
  • Inspect BCM connectors, pins, and harness for corrosion, water intrusion, bent pins or damage
  • Check BCM power and ground circuits for proper voltage, continuity and resistance to chassis ground
  • Monitor CAN/LIN bus traffic to confirm module presence/heartbeat and no bus-off conditions
  • Check OEM service information/TSBs for known BCM EEPROM issues and required software

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage (B+) with ignition on and during cranking
  • Ignition (IGN) feed presence and voltage stability
  • CAN bus heartbeat or module presence (TX/RX messages from BCM)
  • EEPROM checksum or CRC status (if available via scan tool)
  • Module software/part number, calibration ID and programming status
  • Module wake/sleep states and wake command responses

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record all DTCs, freeze frame and current module software/part numbers. Save or print reports for reference.
  2. Confirm basic power: measure battery voltage, then with ignition ON measure B+ at BCM power pins and ground continuity to chassis. Repair any low voltage or bad grounds.
  3. Visually inspect BCM and connector for contamination, corrosion, water damage, loose pins, or physical issues. Repair connectors/harness as needed.
  4. Attempt communication with the BCM using an OEM-level scan tool. If tool cannot communicate, verify CAN/LIN bus wiring and termination; repair bus faults first.
  5. If communication is possible, query EEPROM/checksum/CRC status and try clearing the code. Cycle ignition and re-scan to see if the DTC returns.
  6. Check vehicle service information for required software updates or reflash procedures. If an update is available, perform reprogramming per OEM procedure (follow battery power and tool requirements).
  7. If reprogram/reflash fails or EEPROM reports persistent internal fault, follow OEM guidance for module re-initialization, module replacement or EEPROM repair procedure. Back up any programmable data (VIN, coding) before replacement.
  8. After repair/reprogramming or module replacement, re-code/reprogram module as required, clear codes, and perform full system verification and road test to confirm fault is resolved.
  9. If fault persists after replacement and correct wiring/power confirmed, escalate to manufacturer diagnostics or consider component-level repair by a specialist.

Likely causes

  • Corrupted EEPROM contents due to failed reflash or write cycle
  • Loss of battery power while the BCM was writing configuration data
  • Failed or degraded BCM hardware (EEPROM chip or controller)
  • Loose/oxidized power or ground connection to the BCM
