  4. Back-probe the stepper actuator connector with ignition ON. Verify battery voltage at power pin and that ground is present at ground pin.
  5. With HVAC control commanded to move defrost/demist, observe control wires: look for switching/pulsing signals. Use an oscilloscope if available to confirm waveform.
  6. Measure coil resistance of the actuator. An open or very high resistance indicates a failed motor; near-zero resistance to chassis indicates a short-to-ground.
  7. If wiring appears suspect, disconnect actuator and perform a continuity/short-to-ground test from the module connector pins to chassis. Repair any shorted or open conductors.
  8. If wiring and supply are good but actuator shows fault, bench-test actuator by applying appropriate power drivers (or swap with known-good actuator) to confirm failure.
  9. If wiring and actuator are good, suspect HVAC/control module output fault — verify outputs at module and consult manufacturer module tests or update software as required.
  10. Repair or replace failed component (connector, wiring section, actuator, or module), clear codes and verify proper operation through several cycles and a road test or climate operation test.
