Causes

Symptoms

  • SRS / airbag warning lamp illuminated on instrument panel

  • Vehicle may not pass safety or inspection checks while lamp is on

What to check

  • Read and record SRS freeze frame and live data with an appropriate scan tool
  • Confirm code is stored (not historic), then clear and attempt to re-run to see if code returns
  • Visually inspect RL roof rail, pillar, and connector areas for damage, pinched wiring, moisture or corrosion
  • Inspect and wiggle harness sections while monitoring scanner for changes in DTC or live data
  • Check integrity and torque of nearby chassis ground points and bonding straps
  • Confirm any recent interior/trim service in RL area that could have disturbed wiring

Signal parameters

  • Expected squib resistance (typical curtain squib): low single-digit ohms (commonly ~1–5 Ω). Refer to vehicle service data for exact value.
  • Open-circuit: very high/infinite ohms (indicates open wiring or disconnected connector)
  • Short-to-ground: near 0 Ω or low-resistance path to chassis ground
  • With ignition off: no squib firing voltage present; do not measure with system armed or without following safety procedures

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. SAFETY FIRST: Follow manufacturer SRS procedures. Disable SRS power source per service manual (disconnect battery negative, use specified waiting time for capacitors to discharge) before disconnecting connectors or working on squibs.
  2. Retrieve DTC and freeze-frame with scan tool. Note history and other SRS codes.
  3. Visually inspect RL curtain airbag connector, harness routing along roof/pillar, and any splice points for chafing, corrosion, water entry or pin damage.
  4. With SRS disabled per manual, disconnect the RL curtain airbag connector at the airbag module. Measure squib resistance across the module pins with a low-resistance ohmmeter. Compare to specification. If out of spec, consider module replacement.
  5. If squib resistance is normal, reconnect module and backprobe harness at connector (or disconnect and measure between harness side and ECU) to isolate harness. With SRS disabled, check continuity between harness connector pin and SRS ECU pin. Inspect for short to chassis by measuring resistance between harness pin and a clean ground point.
  6. If short to ground is present, systematically disconnect sections (roof harness connectors, splice blocks) to isolate the short location. Repair damaged wire, replace connectors or splices as required.
  7. If harness and module check good, inspect SRS ECU connector pins for corrosion/damage and verify ECU ground and power circuits. If wiring and modules verify OK, consider SRS ECU fault and follow manufacturer procedures for ECU testing/replacement.
  8. After repairs, reconnect everything, clear codes, reconnect battery per procedure and perform SRS system checks with scan tool to confirm the code does not return.
  9. Note: Do not perform resistance or continuity checks with unit armed or battery connected unless service manual instructs specific live tests. Use insulated tools and proper ESD precautions.

  • Connector at RL curtain airbag or splice corroded or pushed out
  • Wire abrasion to chassis causing short to ground in harness routed along roof/door pillar
  • Detached or corroded ground point on body near rear-left wheelhouse/roof rail
