Causes

  • Blown fuse or related power supply fault
  • Damaged, corroded, or disconnected connector at mirror or switch
  • Open or shorted wiring between switch, mirror motor and BCM
  • Faulty left mirror control switch (internal contacts/electronics)
  • Failed mirror adjustment motor or internal mirror harness
  • Poor ground at mirror or BCM

Symptoms

  • Left exterior mirror will not adjust or adjusts intermittently
  • Mirror movement works in some directions but not others
  • No response from left mirror control while right mirror works normally
  • Possible stored B1539 fault in BCM and related message in diagnostics
  • In rare cases, mirror heating or auto-fold features may be affected

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and readiness with a diagnostic scanner; confirm B1539 is present and note conditions (ignition state, vehicle speed, voltage)
  • Visually inspect fuse(s) for mirror circuits and related power feeds
  • Inspect door harness, especially at the hinge/boot area, for chafing or broken wires
  • Check connectors at the left mirror, switch, and BCM for corrosion, bent pins or poor contact
  • Perform a wiggle test on the door harness and mirror connector while operating the switch to reproduce the fault
  • Measure supply voltage to the mirror switch with ignition on (should be near battery voltage) and check ground continuity

Signal parameters

  • Ignition ON supply to mirror switch: ~11–14 V (battery voltage range)
  • Switch reference/logic signal (if multiplexed): defined by manufacturer communication protocol (check service data)
  • Ground continuity: near 0 ohms between mirror ground pin and chassis ground
  • Switch contact resistance: close to 0 ohms when closed, high/OL when open (mechanical switches)
  • Mirror motor current draw during movement: typically a few hundred mA up to ~2 A (brief peaks); sustained high current indicates stalled motor
  • No activity or stuck high/low voltage on signal line when operating switch indicates open/short

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner, read DTCs and freeze frame data. Note any related codes (power, communication, mirror motor faults).
  2. Perform a visual inspection of fuses, wiring, connectors at the driver door, mirror and behind the switch. Repair obvious damage.
  3. With ignition ON, verify battery voltage at the mirror switch power pin. If missing, trace upstream fuse/relay/power feed.
  4. Verify ground by measuring resistance between switch/mirror ground and chassis. Repair poor ground connections.
  5. Operate the mirror switch while probing the switch output pins. Confirm voltage changes to the mirror motor connector corresponding to switch commands.
  6. If circuit is open, perform continuity check between switch and mirror motor connector through the door harness and hinge area. Repair broken wires.
  7. If signals are present but mirror does not move, measure motor current during operation to check for motor stall or high draw. Replace motor if necessary.
  8. If wiring and motor test good, bench-test or swap the mirror control switch (or switch assembly) with a known good unit to confirm switch failure.
  9. After repairs or parts replacement, clear codes and perform functional test of left mirror through multiple cycles. Re-scan for B1539 replay.
  10. If problem persists with correct voltages and continuity, consider BCM/module diagnostic—check for intermittent data bus faults or perform module programming/replace per manufacturer procedures.

Likely causes

  • Corroded connector at left mirror or inside door harness
  • Broken wire in the door hinge/door jamb area (pinch point)
  • Failed mirror switch (most common)
  • Intermittent ground or supply voltage to mirror switch
  • Aftermarket repair or door panel removal left connectors loose

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored when the BCM detects an open, short, implausible voltage or loss of expected signal from the left exterior mirror control switch circuit. The condition may be persistent or intermittent; module sets the code when measured values fall outside the expected range or communication with the mirror function fails.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
