Causes

  • Occupant classification (passenger presence) sensor fault or failure
  • Faulty passenger airbag disable switch or indicator circuit
  • Open, shorted, corroded or disconnected wiring/connectors under the passenger seat
  • Faulty seat belt buckle/occupancy sensors affecting classification logic
  • SRS control module (airbag ECU) internal fault or software issue
  • Water intrusion or prior repair damage to seat/seat sensors

Symptoms

  • SRS/Airbag warning lamp illuminated on instrument panel
  • Passenger airbag OFF indicator lit even when seat is occupied
  • Passenger airbag remains disabled and will not arm
  • Intermittent changes in passenger airbag status with occupant movement
  • Related SRS faults stored in airbag control module

What to check

  • Read SRS/airbag codes with an airbag-capable scan tool and record freeze-frame/live data
  • Visually inspect connectors, wiring and seat base for damage, corrosion or water
  • Check passenger occupant detection sensor connectors under the seat are fully engaged
  • Verify passenger airbag OFF/ON lamp operation and compare with scan tool 'occupant' status
  • Check seat belt buckle sensors and wiring for continuity and correct operation
  • Inspect for previous repairs or splice points in seat/occupant system wiring harness

Signal parameters

  • Occupant sensor outputs / classification values shown on scan tool (manufacturer-specific numeric range)
  • Seat belt buckle switch: closed = near 0 Ω, open = high resistance/infinite (measure only per OEM procedure)
  • SRS module communication: proper CAN/serial messages present (scan tool should show no communication errors)
  • Airbag squib circuit resistance: manufacturer specified low ohm value (do not attempt unless following OEM safety procedures)
  • Power/reference supply to occupant sensor: expected reference voltage present at connector (check with scan tool or manufacturer data)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all SRS fault codes and freeze frame data with a dealer-level or SRS-capable scan tool.
  2. Confirm SRS warning lamp behaviour and passenger airbag OFF indicator state; compare against scan tool occupant classification values.
  3. Disable vehicle power per manufacturer procedure (disconnect battery negative and wait recommended time) before inspecting SRS wiring/connectors.
  4. Perform a careful visual inspection under the passenger seat: connectors, sensor mat, harness routing, signs of chafing, corrosion or water damage.
  5. Reconnect battery/power and with scan tool monitor occupant detection raw values while a qualified person occupies the passenger seat to see if values change correctly.
  6. Check continuity and connector integrity for seat belt buckle switch and occupant sensor harness using OEM test procedures and values.
  7. If wiring and connectors are good but sensor values are out of range, follow manufacturer guidance to replace the occupant detection mat/module or the buckle sensor as required.
  8. If replacement performed, clear codes, perform any calibration/occupant sensor setup required by OEM, and verify SRS lamp extinguishes and passenger airbag status is correct.
  9. If faults persist or SRS module shows internal error, consult manufacturer technical service documents for module reprogramming or replacement.

Likely causes

  • Broken or loose harness connector under passenger seat
  • Damaged occupant detection mat or sensor elements (resistive/capacitive layer)
  • Failed passenger airbag cutoff switch (if fitted) or faulty lamp/indicator circuit
  • Intermittent wiring short caused by seat position mechanism
  • Corrosion or water damage to seat electronics

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Passenger airbag has been disabled (cut off) due to detected fault in occupant classification/disable circuit or related wiring/components. Airbag may remain turned off until the fault is repaired and codes are cleared.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
