Causes

  • Damaged wiring insulation contacting a constant 12V source (pinched or chafed harness)
  • Faulty window switch stuck or internally shorted
  • Window motor internal short to battery
  • Faulty door control module or body control module (BCM) power output
  • Corroded/contaminated connector or terminal causing unintended B+ connection
  • Aftermarket accessory or incorrect previous repair creating a hard-wired feed

Symptoms

  • Window stuck, operates intermittently, or runs continuously
  • Blown fuse or circuit breaker on window circuit
  • Unable to move affected window using switch or remote
  • Other door electrical functions abnormal (mirror, lock) if shared circuit
  • Stored B1549 code and possibly related body module faults

What to check

  • Read stored DTCs and freeze-frame / module data with OEM-capable scanner
  • Visual inspection of door harness boot, connectors, and switch for damage or corrosion
  • Check fuses and circuit breakers for the window circuit
  • Measure voltage at switch connector with ignition on and off
  • Disconnect the window motor and check if code clears or behavior changes
  • Inspect for aftermarket wiring or recent repairs in door area

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage at feed circuit: ~12.0–14.5 V with ignition on
  • With ignition off and circuit inactive: feed should not be permanently at battery on signal/return pins
  • Motor winding DC resistance: typically low (approx 0.5–10 Ω) — model dependent; check service data
  • Switch output should toggle between near 0 V and battery voltage when operated
  • Continuity: no low-resistance connection between switched circuit and permanent B+ when circuit is off (open/very high Ω)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm: Connect a diagnostic tool, read B1549 and any related codes; note freeze-frame data and module reports.
  2. Safe isolation: Park vehicle, turn ignition off, follow manufacturer procedures for disabling SRS/airbag if removing door trim; disconnect battery negative if required before doing in-door repairs.
  3. Visual: Inspect door wiring loom/boot at hinge area for chafes, pinches, water ingress, or aftermarket taps.
  4. Fuse check: Verify window circuit fuse/circuit breaker condition and note if it has blown or tripped repeatedly.
  5. Backprobe switch connector: With ignition on, measure feed and outputs at the window switch while operating it. Look for permanent B+ on pins that should be switched.
  6. Isolate motor: Disconnect the window motor connector. Clear the code and operate the switch. If code clears or symptom stops, suspect motor or wiring between motor and switch.
  7. Wiggle test: With connector connected, wiggle harness in the hinge boot while monitoring voltage and watching for intermittent shorts or code reappearance.
  8. Check continuity/isolation: With battery disconnected, use an ohmmeter to check for shorts between the suspected circuit and permanent B+ and ground. Repair any shorted wiring or replace damaged connectors.
  9. Swap/test components: If wiring checks good, test/replace the window switch or swap in known-good door control module per service manual procedures.
  10. Re-test and clear codes: After repairs, clear codes, recheck system operation, and confirm no recurrence with multiple window operations and door cycles.

Likely causes

  • Pinched cable in door hinge/boot contacting permanent 12V conductor
  • Switch internal contact welded or shorted to battery rail
  • Motor armature or brush short to battery terminal inside motor
  • Power feed pin on connector bridged to signal/return pin by corrosion or solder
  • BCM/output transistor failed shorted to B+
